Dent tops $1 million in winnings

Former Corona del Mar High standout Taylor Dent won his second

consecutive tournament Sunday, defeating Armenia’s Sargis Sargsian in

the final of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.

Last week, Dent won the Thailand Open. He has now won 10

consecutive matches since his best showing in a Grand Slam event last

month at the U.S. Open, where he retired because of injury in a

quarterfinal match against No. 1-seeded Andre Agassi.

With the $142,000 paycheck he received from Sunday’s victory, Dent

has now won more than $1 million in his career. More than half of his

earnings have come in the 2003 season.

He has three victories this year, having won in Memphis earlier

this season. He has four career singles titles.

Dent also became the first American player to ever win the Kremlin

Open.

OCC notches two wins

* GOLF: The Orange Coast College women’s golf team picked up a

pair of Orange Empire Conference victories Monday in a four-way match

at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club.

The Pirates shot a team total of 364 on the par-70 Mesa Linda

course, finishing behind Saddleback (315) and ahead of Golden West

(368) and Irvine Valley (392). Orange Coast (10-7, 6-2 in conference)

gets credit for victories over the latter two and a loss to

Saddleback.

Lorraine Fernando led Orange Coast with an 88. Megan Parkovich

added a 90 and Joanne Durocher and Ashlee Kendall both shot 93.

Edison defeats Sailors

* GOLF: Newport Harbor High sophomore Natalie Draganza shot

1-over-par 37 to pace the Sailors, who dropped a nonleague girls golf

match to Edison, 243-252, Monday at Mile Square Golf Club in Fountain

Valley.

Edison’s Jennie Lee shot 34 to earn medalist honors.

Kayleigh Horn shot 46 for Newport Harbor.

Eagles, Cahuantzi win

* CROSS COUNTRY: Estancia High junior Alex Cahuantzi claimed the

individual title to help lead the Eagles boys cross country team to

the small schools division crown Saturday at the Yucaipa invitational

at Yucaipa High.

Cahuantzi completed the three-mile course in 16:35, pulling away

from teammate Matt Zich, a senior who was second in 16:42.

Ernesto Castaneda (17:31), Panfilo Elias (17:40) and C.J Buchman

(17:54) also scored for the Eagles.

The Estancia girls finished second in their division, led by

Jeannette Abrego, who was third in 20:24.

Estancia freshman Sydney Barloon was sixth (21:02), while Okairy

Lomeli (22:36), Diana Castro (22:58), Lucy Leon ( 23:24), Brittanie

Starn (24:07) and Cyrstal Rincon (24:26) rounded out the Eagle

contingent.
