Mustang victory ignited by Yellin, Roche

Luke Yellin scored six goals and John Roche followed with five in
host Costa Mesa High’s 23-7 victory over Ocean View Tuesday in a
Golden West League boys water polo game.
Mesa (6-4, 1-1 in league) scored eight goals in both the first and
fourth quarters. Roche led the Mustangs with six steals.
Jesse Ahearn found the cage three times as did Phong Nguyen while
Kyle Thorsness scored twice. Ernie Carbajal, Nick Fisk, Chris Medina
and Daniel Moreno all added single goals to help Mesa. Fred Gatty
made seven saves. The Mustangs host nonleague foe Troy at 3 p.m.
Thursday.
Lions edge Estancia
* WATER POLO: Estancia High’s boys water polo team had a 2-0 lead,
but lost to Golden West League visitor Westminster, 6-4, Tuesday.
The Eagles (3-5, 0-1 in league) received two goals from junior
Richard McElveny while getting single tallies from Sean Goodman and
Paul Collier. Nathan Marsteller made 11 saves in goal.
CdM tops record again
* GOLF: A week after setting a school record, the Corona del Mar
High girls golf team shot its lowest round in history with a 220-247
victory over Tesoro to begin Pacific Coast League play Tuesday.
Junior Katie Albright shot 1-over-par 36 with one birdie on the
par-35 Newport Beach Country Club course to lead the Sea Kings (4-3,
1-0 in league). Sophomore Katie McKitterick shot 39 followed by
Veronica Friedman’s 46.
Caitlin McDonald carded a 48 and Jonna Kim finished with a 51.
CdM defeated Aliso Niguel, 221-242, Sept. 23, which was the lowest
score a girls team had shot in school history before Tuesday’s mark.
Sailors drop opener
* GOLF: Sophomore Natalie Draganza earned medalist honors with a
39, but the Newport Harbor High girls golf team was edged, 237-240,
by Sea View League foe Foothill at Big Canyon Country Club Tuesday.
Lightning improved
* GOLF: Sage Hill School’s girls golf team surpassed its win total
of a year ago with a 297-340 Orange Coast League victory over Orange
Tuesday on the par-36 Rancho San Joaquin Golf Course.
Freshman Emma Koh took medalist honors with a 52 followed by
Natalie Kraft’s 54 for Sage Hill (3-2, 1-0 in league), which won two
matches last year.
Pirate men earn tie
* SOCCER: Adam Uhl knocked in a first-time rebound with 10
minutes remaining to help the Orange Coast College men’s soccer team
earn a 1-1 draw with visiting Irvine Valley Tuesday in Orange Empire
Conference play.
Sage Hill wins opener
* CROSS COUNTRY: With seven runners in the top 10, the Sage Hill
School boys cross country team defeated Capistrano Valley Christian,
24-36, in its Academy League opener at Irvine Park Tuesday.
Senior Chris Chiboucas led the Lightning with a second-place
finish (16:55), while Zach Chandy, Tristan Cordier, Tim Lefler, Matt
Sanford and Nick Gross followed.
Pirates lose a pair
* GOLF: The Orange Coast College women’s golf team fell to
Saddleback, 309-368, and Santiago Canyon, 357-368, in a three-way
nonconference match Monday at El Prado Golf Course in Chino.
Laura Sumpter shot 13-over-par 83 and Lorraine Fernando shot 84 to
pace the Pirates (8-5).
