Sailors rip in opener

Newport Harbor High’s surf team opened the Sea View League season
Tuesday morning by defeating Santa Margarita, 96-30, near the 56th
Street break in Newport Beach.
Newport Harbor graduated several top surfers from last year’s team
and features many new faces in the ocean this year with an opening
lineup of nine sophomores, five juniors, four seniors and three
freshmen.
In Tuesday’s meet, Newport Harbor captured first place in six of
seven boys heats for its point total. The maximum points a team can
earn per event is 105.
The first heat saw double overhead sets as the Sailors’ Joey Head
opened the contest with a long left, ultimately winning the heat. The
seventh (and final) heat ended with chest high waves as Jared Mell
lead the Newport Harbor longboarders to victory.
Also winning shortboard heats for Newport were Tommy Holbrook,
Daniel Shea and Bronson Hovnanian, while Sailors Daniel Mathews
(bodyboarding) and Jill Austin (girls short/longboard) also won
heats.
There are five teams in the Sea View League. In addition to Harbor
and Santa Margarita, Calvary Chapel of Santa Ana, Los Alamitos and
Mater Dei are in the league. Each team competes against each other
twice leading up to the league finals on Dec. 2.
The Sailors’ home break is 56th Street. They will host Mater Dei
on Sept. 30 at 6:30 a.m.
