Corona del Mar High’s girls golf team defeated Aliso Niguel 221-242
in a nonleague match Tuesday at Newport Beach Country Club. The 221
is the best round for a girls golf team in school history, according
to Coach Mike Starkweather, in his sixth year at the helm.
“It beat the record we set last year by 15 stokes,” Starkweather
said. “We are real excited.”
Junior Katie Albright and sophomore Katie McKitterick both shot 41
to earn co-medalist honors while Veronica Friedman and Caitlin
McDonald each fired 46s for CdM (3-1). Freshman Jonna Kim carded a 47
on the par-35 front nine.
Sage Hill goes down in four
* VOLLEYBALL: Visiting Calvary Chapel Downey rebounded to defeat
Sage Hill School, 17-25, 26-24, 24-17, 24-19, in nonleague girls
volleyball action Tuesday.
Sophomore outside hitter Sophia Hillgren slammed a team-high 16
kills and added six service aces for the Lightning (2-2) while Cat
Dailey had four stuff blocks.
Setter Debbie Yoder-Lee led in assists while Kelsey Lawler tallied
eight digs.
Sage Hill and Calvary were tied twice in the fourth game, but Sage
could never grab the lead.
The Lightning will play in the University High Tournament on
Saturday.
Poncino leads ‘Eaters
* GOLF: UC Irvine senior Vinnie Poncino shot 8-under 208 to lead
the Anteaters to a sixth-place finish Tuesday at the Pacific
Invitational at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton.
Georgia won the 12-team event at 854; UCI shot 873 in the
three-day tournament. Poncino finished second overall among
individuals, four shots off the pace of winner Aron Price (Georgia
Southern).
Pirate women slash Hornets
* SOCCER: Orange Coast College’s women’s soccer team picked up two
wins Tuesday, but the second one had to be earned.
Host OCC defeated Fullerton, 3-1, in Orange Empire Conference play
Tuesday afternoon after tallying a forfeit win from Pasadena in the
morning. OCC lost to Pasadena, 2-1, Sept. 2 to begin the season.
Jenny Chavis, Michelle Jacot and Allison Apodaca each scored goals
for Coast (3-3, 2-2 in conference). Jessica Hull, Blaire Nakano and
Chavis all tallied assists. Michelle Vahdatipour made six saves for
OCC.
Nutter leads Orange Coast
* SOCCER: Eric Nutter scored one goal and added an assist to lead
the Orange Coast College men’s soccer team to a 2-0 nonconference
victory over visiting Cuyamaca Tuesday.
Jose Serpas’ cross found Nutter on the left flank for Coast’s
first goal 17 minutes into the game. Four minutes later Nutter drove
deep toward the goal and found a streaking Joel Sotolongo in the
middle of the box. Sotolongo’s shot slipped under Cuyamaca goalkeeper
Kenny Brandenburg to complete the scoring.
Mark Spears made one save for the Pirates (3-2) in their final
nonconference game.
Vanguard rallies for victory
* VOLLEYBALL: The Vanguard University women’s volleyball team
rallied to defeat visiting Master’s College in four games Tuesday,
28-30, 30-19, 33-31, 30-26 as the Lions improved to 8-3. Marissa
Cothran had a season-high 51 assists for VU, while Lindsay Kaiser
topped all players with 27 digs. The Lions have won three straight
matches.
Costa Mesa comes up short
* WATER POLO: Costa Mesa High sophomore Kyle Thorsness scored six
goals, but the Mustang boys water polo team dropped a 14-7 decision
to Golden West League host Saddleback on Tuesday.
Junior Evan Spencer added one goal for the Mustangs (2-4, 1-0 in
league). Mesa junior Matt Jaroslawski recorded six saves against the
Roadrunners.
The Mustangs return to action Friday in the Magnolia tournament.
They went 1-1 in tourney action Monday, as Thorsness scored seven
goals to lead Mesa to a 17-5 win over Magnolia. Spencer contributed
three goals, Brian Tipton chipped in two, while Luke Yellin, Brian
Knox and Sergio Hernandez added one.
Costa Mesa lost, 8-7, to Sunny Hills in its second game of the
Magnolia tournament.
Orange Coast wins thrice
* GOLF: The Orange Coast College women’s golf team earned three
victories in Orange Empire Conference play Monday at the Costa Mesa
Golf 7 Country Club’s Mesa Linda course.
The Pirates (7-3, 4-0 in conference) shot 364 as a team, topping
visiting Santiago Canyon (387), Santa Ana (403) and Fullerton
(forfeit).
Lorraine Fernando and Laura Sumpter each shot 16-over-par 87 for
the Pirates, one shot behind medalist Jill Mahany from Santa Ana.
Joanne Durocher (91) and Megan Parkovich (99) also scored for OCC.
