Newport Harbor High senior Diana Khoury didn’t lose a game in singles
and the visiting Sailors took care of Capistrano Valley, 17-1,
Tuesday in a nonleague girls tennis match.
Khoury has only lost one set the whole year and was joined by
Vanessa Dunlap and Bonnie Adams in singles sweeps for Newport (3-0),
which lost to Capo, 11-7, a year ago. The Cougars fell to 0-5.
Newport’s freshmen doubles team of Chrissy Schwartz and Sasha
Dunlap remain undefeated after sweeping three sets Tuesday.
Newport hosts perennial powerhouse Peninsula at 2 p.m. today.
Estancia edges Santa Ana
* Tied 8-8 with two singles sets still on the court, Estancia
High’s Stacie Nellor and freshman Sara Stratton both won their sets
to propel the Eagles to a 10-8 Golden West League victory over
visiting Santa Ana.
Nellor swept three sets at No. 1 singles while Yvonne Zaidler took
two of three. Asia Ingram and partner Heather Morton took two of
three sets at No. 1 doubles for the Eagles (5-0, 4-0 in league) while
Huong Thai and Kittiya Sudhikam completed the same feat against Santa
Ana (6-1, 2-1 in league).
Estancia hosts Costa Mesa at 3 p.m. Thursday.
CdM loses to Beverly Hills
* Jami Steele and Hayley Young swept at No. 2 doubles for Corona
del Mar High’s girls tennis team, but it wasn’t enough as host
Beverly Hills claimed an 11-7 nonleague victory.
The Sea Kings’ No. 1 doubles team of Jackie Manning and Miranda
Young and the third doubles team of Courtney Carnahan and Rachel
Miller each won a set. Freshman Jill Damion won the only singles set
for CdM (2-2), playing without seniors Brittany Holland, Juliette
Mutzke and Amanda Rubenstein, who were studying for Advanced
Placement classes, Coach Scott Feichter said.
Steele and Young were down 3-0 in the tiebreaker against Beverly
Hills’ No. 1 duo, but came back to win, 7-5.
“It’s really fun to watch Steele playing with a partner, she works
the stage,” Feichter said.
CdM travels to face Dana Hills at 3 p.m. Thursday.
