Sailors 4th at invite

* NEWPORT HARBOR: Kenny Rakestraw led the Newport Harbor High boys

cross country team to a fourth-place finish among sophomores, which

included 20 teams, at the Woodbridge Invitational Saturday.

Rakestraw finished second in 16:23, a personal record by almost

more than 30 seconds faster than he finished last week. Junior Nick

St. Andre finished 13th among juniors, coming in at 16:26, while

senior Martin Bernard was 24th in his class, finishing in 16:59.

Sophomore Robert Khoury achieved a personal record, coming in 29th

in 17:36. Senior Michael Donald and sophomore Adam Mayfield both

recorded a time of 17:39. It was Mayfield’s personal record, nearly

90 seconds better than his previous best completed last year.

“I was pretty pleased,” Newport Coach Nowell Kay said. “Our top 10

guys ran their fastest times ever so we are going in the right

direction. We are way ahead of schedule from last year, which is very

encouraging. We just have to get a few guys healthy and we’ll be very

competitive.”

Two of Newport’s top runners, senior Nick Miller and sophomore Wes

Urtusuastegui, did not compete Saturday because of minor injuries,

but they should be ready for action next week, Kay said.
