Newport boys polo edged in OT

With two goals in the second overtime period Coronado High eked past

Newport Harbor High’s boys water polo team, 12-11, in a heated

nonleague game at Corona del Mar Saturday.

Senior Michael Bury led Newport (0-2) with four goals, but

received his third ejection with 20 seconds left in regulation and

sat the rest of the way. Sailor sophomore Clay Jorth contributed

three goals, including an outside shot with five seconds remaining,

tying the game, 10-10, and sending it to the two three-minute

overtime periods.

Senior Griffin Gentry, who scored three goals, fired in a shot

past three defenders, taking advantage of Newport’s extra-man chance

when Coronado did not have its goalie with 2:12 remaining in the

first overtime period.

Coronado did not score in the first overtime period, but outscored

CdM, 2-0 in the second overtime, gaining both goals with the extra

man.

Senior Bryan Auer scored one goal for the Sailors, while junior

Michael Robinson recorded 11 saves.

Diadora Pro finals set

* TENNIS: Jimy Szymanski of Venezuela and Aleksandar Vlaski of

Yugoslavia will square off at noon today in the championship match of

the Diadora Pro Championship, a men’s United States Tennis

Association Futures tour stop, at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Tars go 5-1 in tourney

* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High girls volleyball team

reached the quarterfinals of the Dave Mohs tournament, but lost,

25-14, 25-10, to Esperanza Saturday at Edison High.

Newport is 6-1 after winning two of its three matches Saturday.

The Sailors started the day with a 27-25, 25-19 victory over

Valencia, which completed a 4-0 run to win their pool.

Then, Newport defeated Dana Hills, 25-23, 25-16, in the first round of the playoffs. However, the Sailors seemed to run out of gas

and lost to Esperanza in a quarterfinal.

Senior Alyson Jennings led Newport with 25 kills in the three

matches. Senior Lauren Miller recorded six kills in the victory over

Valencia, while junior Taryn Tarnutzer contributed five kills in the

Sailors’ win over Dana Hills. Senior Kellie King provided three

jump-serve aces to open the match against Dana Hills.

‘Eaters rally for win

* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team defeated host

UC Riverside, 30-32, 30-27, 38-36, 27-30, 15-11 to improve to 11-3,

2-0 in the Big West Conference. Kelly Wing led UCI with a match-high

29 kills, while four other Anteaters reached doubles figures: Sami

Cash (20), Dana Kurzbard (17), Terbie Taylor (15) and Amanda Vazquez

(11).

CdM loses in semis

* VOLLEYBALL: The Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team lost

to Esperanza, 25-16, 25-14, in the semifinals of the Dave Mohs

tournament Saturday at Edison.

Corona (6-2) opened Saturday’s action with a 25-18, 25-16 win over

St. Margaret’s. Then the Sea Kings defeated Pacific Coast League foe

Northwood, 25-13, 25-28, 15-13, to advance to a quarterfinal.

Ashley Bill amassed 27 assists to help lead CdM past Huntington

Beach, 25-19, 21-25, 15-13. Breanne Ogden collected nine kills and

Erica Solis added seven in the Sea Kings’ win over the Oilers.

Lindsey Ensign recorded 29 kills in three out of the four matches

Saturday. Ensign, along with Jordan Smith and Lauren Snell were key

players in CdM’s victory over Harvard-Westlake Friday night.

UCI denied by Trojans

* WATER POLO: The UC Irvine men’s water polo team nearly upset

top-ranked USC and suffered two losses by one-goal margins to open

the Southern California men’s water polo tournament at the Anteater

Aquatics Complex Saturday.

Sophomore Juraj Zatovic’s goal with 17 seconds remaining in

regulation led USC past No. 7 UCI, 10-9. The Trojans, who are tied

with Stanford for the nation’s No. 1 spot, never trailed in the last

three quarters, but the game was tied six times after USC had taken a

3-2 lead on a power-play goal by Thomas Hale with one second left in

the first period.

The two teams traded goals in the regular overtime session of two

three-minute periods before Tomassi connected on a power-play goal

2:25 into sudden victory.

Hess leads VU to win

* SOCCER: Matt Hess, Vanguard University’s leading scorer, tallied

both goals Saturday night for the host Lions as they edged NAIA

Region II foe Notre Dame de Namur, 2-1, in a nonconference men’s

soccer game.

Zipprich leads VU

* SOCCER: Jenifer Zipprich scored an unassisted game-winning goal

for the Vanguard University women’s soccer team Saturday as the host

Lions, unranked in NAIA, upset No. 7 Notre Dame de Namur, 1-0, in a

nonconference game.

Lions beat Hope in four

* VOLLEYBALL: Jaclyn Lee had 12 kills and Vanguard University

teammates Kelli Whittaker and Livia Peace added 11 each as the

visiting Lions’ women’s volleyball team defeated Hope International,

30-20, 30-20, 22-30, 30-26, in a Golden State Athletic Conference

match Saturday in Fullerton.

Orange Coast triumphs

* VOLLEYBALL: Orange Coast College’s women’s volleyball team won

the Pasadena City College tournament for the first time with three

victories Saturday.

Coast defeated Victor Valley, 25-15, 25-10, in the final, while

posting a 25-16, 25-23 triumph over Moorpark in the semifinals. The

Pirates (3-0) , the top-seeded team going into the 16-team

tournament, defeated Santa Monica City, 19-25, 25-19, 15-10, in the

quarterfinals Saturday. Coast went undefeated in pool play.

Setter Amber McCarthy was named tournament Most Valuable Player

while Christine Woller, an opposite, was named first-team

all-tournament. Coast lost in the tournament semifinals a year ago.
