UCI to play in three TV games

The UC Irvine men’s basketball team will be included in three of the

nine games on Fox Sports Net West 2 in the Big West Conference

television package announced by Big West Commissioner Dennis Farrell

Thursday. The package includes eight regular-season men’s games and

the championship game of the women’s postseason league tournament.

The deal features a departure from Thursday night telecasts to a

Saturday format with starting times ranging from the early afternoon

to the evening. UCI’s exposure includes one home game (Jan. 17

against Cal State Fullerton at 1 p.m.) and two road contests.

CdM trounces Troy

* TENNIS: The Corona del Mar High girls team swept in doubles to

earn a 13-5 triumph over nonleague visitor Troy Thursday.

Senior Jackie Manning teamed with freshman Miranda Young at No. 1

doubles, while the tandems of junior Jami Steele and freshman Hayley

Young, as well as senior Juliette Mutzke and freshman Jillian

Braverman, also failed to drop a set for the Sea Kings, who improved

to 2-1.

Eagles remain unbeaten

* TENNIS: Host Estancia High’s girls tennis team improved to 3-0

with its third consecutive 17-1 Golden West League victory, downing

Saddleback Thursday.

Yvonne Zaidler and Sara Stratton swept their singles matches while

Stacie Nellor took two of three sets at No. 1 singles for the Eagles.

Huong Thai and Kittiya Sudhikam lost only one game at No. 1 doubles

for Estancia. Asia Ingram and Heather Morton teamed to win all three

sets at No. 2 doubles. Kathryn Kulczyk and Hannah Simmons added two

victories as the third doubles team with Sage O’Toole and Sarah

Muradian substituting in and winning one set.

Jacobs shoots career low

* GOLF: Junior Ashley Jacobs shot 43 to lead the Newport Harbor

High girls golf team to a 245-254 nonleague victory over Villa Park

Thursday on the par-36 Orange course at Green River Golf Club in

Corona.

Jacobs beat her personal best by one shot a day after shooting a

44 in a 231-234 win over Mission Viejo Wednesday. Jacobs birdied the

par-3, 127-yard ninth hole Thursday. Natalie Draganza and Kayleigh

Horn each shot 46 while Katie McKay carded a 53. Marissa Zehnder shot

57 for Newport (4-0).

Ball falls in quarters

* TENNIS: Corona del Mar High graduate Cameron Ball and partner

Tim Lloyd lost to fellow Americans Ryan Fleming and Adam Marchetti,

6-4, 6-1, in a doubles quarterfinal of the Diadora Pro Championships,

a United States Tennis Association Futures tour stop, at the Costa

Mesa Tennis Center.

Two U.S. doubles teams will play in one semifinal match at 1 p.m.

today when the team of Travis Rettenmaier and Robert Yim competes

against Fleming and Marchetti. Pehar and Nenad Toroman face Hanlin

and Vlaski at 1 p.m. today in the other doubles semifinal.

David Martin defeated fellow American Mirko Pehar, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3,

Thursday to advance to today’s singles quarterfinals. Martin plays at

10 a.m. today against sixth-seeded Aleksandar Vlaski while American

Brian Wilson competes against Austrian Robert Haybittel at 11:30 a.m.

Jimy Szymanski and Luka Gregorc will face each other at 11:30 a.m.

while Matthew Hanlin and Alejandro Asta meet one another at 10 a.m.

to round out singles play.

Finals in both singles and doubles will be Sunday.

Sailors rout Lions

* FIELD HOCKEY: Visiting Newport Harbor made a shooting gallery

out of the Westminster High field Thursday on the way to a 9-0

nonleague triumph.

The Sailors (3-0) fired 43 shots at the Lions, whose tandem of

goalies combined for 32 saves.

Meanwhile, Newport goalie Ciara Lawrence was not required to make

a save to record the shutout.

Senior Tiffany Vandersloot led the offensive onslaught with three

goals, while senior Ashley Harrison and senior Kristen Jendrusina

each had a goal and two assists.

Jillianne Whitfield, Dana Owad, Danielle Pfaff and Danica Kalmbach

also had goals for the winners, who received additional assists from

Ashley Gleason and Lauren Curtis.
