Historic game for Seahawks

After having traveled many roads by bus just to play home games,

Ocean View High’s football team finally gets the chance to experience

playing a night contest on its own campus.

Friday at 7 p.m., the first varsity home game “under the lights”

will take place at Ocean View when the Seahawks actually host Tesoro.

The game is one of four home contests this week on the local prep

scene, as Huntington Beach tonight hosts Costa Mesa and on Friday,

Edison entertains longtime nonleague rival Capistrano Valley and

Marina hosts Newport Harbor in an early season showdown.

A look at this week’s games:

TONIGHT’S GAME

Costa Mesa (0-1) vs. Huntington Beach (0-1)

(at Huntington Beach High, 7 p.m.)

Huntington Beach will need to find a way to plug up Costa Mesa’s

rushing game if the Oilers hope to win this nonleague game.

The Oilers gave up four rushing touchdowns in a 42-14 season

opening loss to Los Amigos. They also had a blocked punt returned for

another score and gave up a 54-yard screen pass for a touchdown.

Huntington quarterback Rory Schoonmaker threw a touchdown pass to

Kyle Lodge and scored on an 11-yard run.

The Oilers will be taking on a Costa Mesa team that dropped its

season opener last week to Corona del Mar, 19-14.

The Mustangs were led by senior running back Omar Ruiz who rushed

for 106 yards and a touchdown.

Last year’s score: teams did not meet.

FRIDAY’S GAMES

Tesoro (1-0) vs. Ocean View (1-0)

(at Ocean View High, 7 p.m.)

It’s been a long time coming, but Ocean View finally will play its

first varsity home football game under the lights.

The Seahawks enter Friday night’s contest having defeated Santiago

on the road, 21-13, in their season opener.

The defense starred in the mistake-prone game as Dale Smith and

Jason Sloan each had a safety and Sloan later returned an

interception 26 yards for Ocean View’s first touchdown of the night.

Quarterback Alex Hickerson scored on a three-yard run.

Last week, Tesoro played its first ever game on its new campus

stadium. The Titans made it memorable, too, as they defeated Ocean

View’s Golden West League rival, Saddleback, 29-15, before an

overflow crowd of 4,000.

Nick Nelson threw a pair of touchdown passes in the victory and

the Titan defense recorded seven sacks and limited Saddleback to just

under 160 yards of total offense.

Last September, Tesoro recorded its first-ever victory in varsity

football competition when it defeated Ocean View.

Last year’s score: Tesoro 16, Ocean View 14

Newport Harbor (1-0) vs. Marina (1-0)

(at Westminster High, 7 p.m.)

Marina’s defense was impressive in its season-opening shutout

victory over Paramount and the Vikings will need to be in top form

once again if they hope to beat Newport Harbor.

In the 12-0 win at Paramount, wideout Jason Burch filled in for

the injured Walter Hildebrand at running back and came up with a big

effort as he rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.

Vikings quarterback Matt Brennan also scored on a one-yard keeper.

Newport Harbor comes into the game having defeated Trabuco Hills,

32-8.

The pass-catch combination of Kasey Peters and Spencer Link

resulted in three touchdowns and the Sailors defense recovered four

fumbles, including one returned by defensive end Saami Khalifian for

a touchdown.

Running back Matt Encinias complimented the Newport offense with

117 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Marina always plays Newport tough and led last year’s contest,

14-7, at the half, before the Sailors staged a second half rally.

Last year’s score: Newport Harbor 23, Marina 14

Capistrano Valley (0-1) vs. Edison (1-0)

(at Huntington Beach High, 7 p.m.)

Edison’s young team took a giant step in the right direction last

week by unending highly-regarded San Clemente on the road, 26-21.

The Chargers got four rushing touchdowns from junior Abel Cardona

and came up with three turnovers in shutting out the Tritons in the

first half.

Sophomore quarterback Brian Shrock was solid in his varsity debut,

going 11 of 19 for 150 yards and getting great protection from his

offensive line.

Capistrano Valley wasn’t as fortunate in its opener as the Cougars

fell to neighborhood rival Aliso Viejo, 21-7.

The Cougars avoided a shutout when quarterback Kevin Quinn scored

with under two minutes to play.

The two teams have met 15 of the past 16 years, with the events of

Sept. 11, 2001, interrupting the county series.

Edison has won the last four meetings between the schools and

hasn’t lost to the Cougars since 1996.
