An evening with the trio

The Philharmonic Society of Orange County will present the

Kobler-Rothmuller-Krieger Piano Trio at the Irvine Barclay Theatre on

Monday night.

The Piano Trio is part of the Philharmonic Society’s Laguna

Chamber Music Series, which is composed of six concerts throughout

the season. Various chamber music groups from around the country are

brought to perform for the music series. “This one is special because

it’s a trio that’s made up of musicians from the area, the violin,

cello and piano. So its great to have a group that’s very close to

home,” said Dean Corey, executive director of the Philharmonic

Society.

The Piano Trio is comprised of instrumentalists Raymond Kobler,

Daniel Rothmuller and Norman Krieger.

Kobler plays the violin and was appointed concertmaster of the

Pacific Symphony Orchestra in 1999 by Music Director Carl St. Clair.

Kobler was the associate concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra

from 1974 to 1980 and he was also the concertmaster of the San

Francisco Symphony Orchestra from 1980 to 1998. He was nominated for

a Grammy Award in 2002 for being a member of the An Die Musik chamber

group and also served as concertmaster for World Orchestra for Peace

in 1995, which is composed of concertmasters and principle musicians

from around the world. He was part of the World Orchestra for Peace

contingent that performed at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 2000.

Rothmuller plays with, and is also the associate principal cellist

of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has worked with several

world-renowned conductors throughout the world. Rothmuller teaches a

class at the USC’s Norton School of Music and has been a faculty

member at Cal Arts.

Krieger is a pianist who lives in Los Angeles. He has performed

with various musical orchestras such as the Boston Pops, Pittsburgh

Symphony and the Baltimore Symphony. He also performs at many

festivals around the world. Corey is excited about having the trio

perform because they are marvelous players.

The trio has been playing together off and on for several years

but Kobler and Rothmuller have been playing together for forty years.

“There both still young men. They have been playing together

probably since they were teenagers so they know each others play

pretty well,” Corey said.

The concert’s program will contain will consist of works by

Beethoven, Brahms, Ravel, and Shostakovich .

“The concert should go very well,” Corey said. “They are doing one

of the Ravel piano trios and it’s a great piece and they do an

incredible job with it. So it’s going to be a wonderful piece of

music making.

“It’s a great opportunity to hear the great talent that is within

our midst,” said Corey.

The concert starts at 8 p.m. at the Irvine Barclay Tickets are

priced from $32,$28 and $26.
