Streit edges Towersey in overtime

Newport Beach golfer Marianne Towersey and Canadian Marlene Streit
needed 24 holes Thursday to decide who would advance to the final of
the United States Golf Association’s Senior Women’s Amateur
Championship at the Barton Creek Resort & Club in Austin, Texas.
Towersey, 52, fought valiantly against the 1956 U.S. Women’s
Amateur champion, but the 69-year-old Streit earned a 1-up victory in
one match-play semifinal on the 5,762-yard, par-72 course.
Towersey, the 19-time women’s champion at Santa Ana Country Club,
squared the match on the 17th hole when Streit hit her tee shot into
the bunker and two-putted.
The two matched pars on 18 and stayed even until the 24th hole,
the par-4, 310-yard sixth hole. Towersey conceded after she hit her
approach shot into a greenside bunker and needed three shots to exit.
Streit won the first two holes before Towersey evened the match by
claiming the fourth and fifth holes. The two stayed tied until Streit
won the 16th hole.
