Towersey moves into semifinals at USGA event in Texas

Marianne Towersey advanced to the semifinals of the United States
Golf Association Senior Women’s Amateur Championship with a 6 and 5
quarterfinal victory Wednesday over Pat Milton from Munroe Falls,
Ohio, at Barton Creek Resort & Club in Austin, Texas.
Towersey, a Newport Beach resident and 19-time Santa Ana Country
Club women’s champion, benefited from two consecutive birdies -- the
par-5, 448-yard eighth hole and the par-3, 120-yard ninth.
Towersey, 52, will face 69-year-old Canadian Marlene Streit in one
semifinal today. Streit, the 1956 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion, is
trying to break Lewis Oehmig’s record as the oldest champion in USGA
history. The 18-hole championship will also be played today.
Packers sign Jackson
* FOOTBALL: Chris Jackson, a former Orange Coast College standout
wide receiver, has signed with the Green Bay Packers.
Jackson practiced with the Packers Wednesday and will be on the
team’s 53-man active roster for its home game against the Detroit
Lions.
UCI water polo No. 7
* WATER POLO: The UC Irvine men’s water polo team is ranked No. 7
in the first Collegiate Coaches Poll of the season.
Defending national champion Stanford, coached by former UCI
standout and Corona del Mar High head man John Vargas, is No. 1,
while USC is No. 2. California, which includes former CdM standout
John Mann, is No. 3.
Coach Ted Newland’s Anteaters (3-1) host USC Sunday at noon.
Hess keys VU victory
* SOCCER: Matt Hess recorded a hat trick to lead the Vanguard
University men’s soccer team to a 4-2 nonconference victory over
visiting Claremont Mudd-Scripps Wednesday.
James Grigas also scored for the Lions (5-1), who received assists
from Armando Ortiz, Jose Hernandez, Mark Babel and Sean Ganey.
Toreros defeat ‘Eaters
* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team suffered its
second loss of the season, 31-33, 30-25, 30-16, 30-24, to the
University of San Diego Tuesday at Crawford Court.
UCI was led by Kelly Wing’s 10-kill, 10-dig performance.
Vanguard women swept
* VOLLEYBALL: The Vanguard University women’s volleyball team
lost its Golden State Athletic Conference opener to Point Loma
Nazarene, ranked No. 5 in the NAIA, 30-23, 30-16, 20-25, Tuesday in
San Diego.
Vanguard (5-1) was paced by sophomores Jaclyn Lee and Keri DeHaas,
who had 10 kills apiece.
Sophomore setter Marissa Cothran contributed 29 assists.
Vaqueros handle OCC
* SOCCER: Host Santa Barbara City College sent the Orange Coast
men’s soccer team to its first loss of the season, a 4-1 setback,
Wednesday in nonconference action.
Joel Soto scored the lone OCC goal on an assist from Eli Solis.
Mark Spears made five saves in goal for Coast (2-1) and was
relieved by Christian Lopez.
