Laguna Art Museum will feature the following exhibits through Oct.

5: “Greetings from Laguna Beach: Our Town in the Early 1900s,”

“Hassel Smith: 55 Years of Painting,” it’s the first comprehensive

survey of this internationally acclaimed Bay Area artist; “Some Fuzzy

Logic: The Joan Simon Menkes Gift,” featuring 50 works from Menkes’

collection that focuses on artists who mostly came to prominence in

THE EARLY 1900s

“Greetings from Laguna Beach: Our Town in the Early 1900s” just

opened at the Laguna Art Museum and will feature paintings,

photographs and memorabilia that chronicle life in Laguna Beach circa

1900 to 1930. The exhibit includes works by William Wendt, Joseph

Kleitsch, Clarence Hinkle, Edgar Payne and Anna Hills. In 1910,

Laguna’s population was around 300 and many of its residents were

writers, artists and musicians -- much like today. Featuring many of

Laguna Beach’s landmarks, past and present, it’s a vivid history of

LAGUNA BEACH FILM SOCIETY

Laguna Beach Film Society, whose mission is to bring to Laguna

monthly screenings of important and provocative new films and shorts

by the world’s most creative directors, will have it’s first

screening “11’09’01” on Sept. 11 by French producer Alain Brigand.

The film is by 11 international directors who have made short films

on the reverberations of the World Trade Center. It will be the

film’s West Coast Premiere and will be shown at Laguna South Coast

CINEMA

Cinema, which is dedicated to exploring the cinematic experience

will have its first film presentation at 7 p.m. and will be “The

Utopian Society,” which is a part of a program series called “The

Human Condition.” The film is a story of six college students

assigned to work on a final paper describing the fundamentals of an

ideal civilization and they only have 24 hours to complete the

The Heart and Soul Coalition is hosting a benefit for the Jane

Goodall Institute and the Cougar Fund starting at 6 p.m. with a

reception. The event will start at 8 p.m. The evening’s featured

speaker will be Goodall along with wildlife photographer Tom

Mangelsen and Cara Blessley Lowe from the Cougar Fund. Tickets are

‘THE LARAMIE PROJECT’

Laguna Playhouse at 606 Laguna Canyon Road. is opening “The

Laramie Project” on Sept. 13 and will run through Oct. 12. This

captivating, vivid and profoundly moving dramatic collage explores

the people of Laramie, Wyoming, the reactions to the circumstances

that led to the beating death in 1998 of a student named Matthew

Shepard. It’s a clear and honest portrait of a small-town American

thrust onto the national stage that leaves one with hope for
