Lions near even with Division II team

The Vanguard University women’s soccer team, which includes 12
underclassmen on its 18-player roster, lost, 3-1, to nonconference
host Cal State Los Angeles, a NCAA Division II team, Tuesday.
The Lions, who compete in the NAIA, finished two goals down, but
were even with the Golden Eagles (1-1) on shots, 15-15. Vanguard
(1-2) fell behind, 2-0, in the first half after Cal State L.A. scored
in the 15th minute and then again with less five minutes remaining
before halftime.
Sophomore Khara Stoneback scored after an assist from senior Amber
Waddle in the 64th minute to cut the Lions’ deficit to 2-1. But Diane
Garcia finished a three-on-two breakaway five minutes later to secure
the victory.
Stacy Britton, a sophomore goalie for the Lions, recorded four
saves. Stoneback and sophomore Ashley DeLoach led the Lions with
three shots each.
Vanguard returns to action Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Cal State
Dominguez Hills, another NCAA Division II team.
UCI men post shutout
* SOCCER: The UC Irvine men’s soccer team shut out the Alabama A&M;
Bulldogs 1-0 at Anteater Stadium in the final game of the UC Irvine
College Classic Monday.
Senior Anthony Vizcarra scored on a rebound after his penalty kick
was saved by Bulldogs goalkeeper Andrew Jjombwe.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Mathy, who had three saves, earned his
second shutout in as many starts this season, helping the Anteaters
improve to 2-0 on the season.
This is the first time since 2000 that the ‘Eaters have begun the
season with a 2-0 record. UCI began its 2000 season with a 4-0
record.
The Anteaters will take on the San Jose State Spartans Friday, at
2:30 p.m. at Anteater Stadium.
UCI defeats SDSU
* SOCCER: The UC Irvine women’s soccer team improved to 2-1 after
defeating the San Diego State Aztecs 4-1 at the Cal State Fullerton
Soccer Town Classic in Fullerton.
The win is the first over San Diego State since 1996 for UCI.
Kim Lloyd opened the scoring off an assist from Carolina Kabe and
added a second goal later in the game, this time assisted by junior
Lachelle Manzano and senior Leah Dawson. Lloyd’s first goal came from
18-yards out and her second was scored off a short cross from
Manzano.
Senior Hayley McNallan and freshman Lauryn Birkinshaw also scored,
with Birkinshaw earning her first career goal off an assist by junior
Tara Weldon in the 70th minute.
The Aztecs, who fell to 0-2, avoided the shutout in the 72nd
minute as Kim Castellanos converted a penalty kick past UCI
goalkeeper Marissa Welliver.
The Anteaters will host the UCI Nike Holiday Invitational Friday
and Sunday at Anteater Stadium.
UCI will face New Mexico at 8:00 p.m. on Friday and Akron at 1:00
p.m. on Sunday.
