UC Irvine names new admissions director

Marguerite Bonous-Hammarth has been named UC Irvine’s director of

admissions and relations with schools. She brings 16 years of

professional and scholarly experience with the University of

California system.

Bonous-Hammarth, whose position will become effective Aug. 25, now

serves as a project director at the UCLA Institute for Social Science

Research, where she has designed and implemented a student

recruitment summer institute program.

Before joining UCLA, she spent 11 years at UCI, where for part of

the time she was program director of research and public policy in

the admissions office.

At UCI, she also assisted in the design and implementation of the

faculty-approved guidelines for freshmen admissions. These guidelines

were among the first to be established in the UC system, leading to

the thorough, comprehensive review of every student’s application.

“I look forward to working with UCI’s faculty and admissions team

to further refine our admission practices,” Bonous-Hammarth said in a

press release. “My most important goal will be attracting highly

qualified students who will take full advantage of the engaging,

invigorating learning community at UCI.”

Bonous-Hammarth earned her bachelor’s in English from State

University of New York at Stony Brook, a master’s in literature from

UC San Diego and a doctorate in education from UCLA.

She replaces Susan Wilbur, who was appointed director of

undergraduate admissions for the UC system in January.

Costa Mesa resident reappointed to county housing commission

Costa Mesa resident James Wahner has been reappointed to serve a

second two-year term on the Housing and Community Development

Commission.

The commission serves in an advisory capacity to the Orange County

Board of Supervisors. It advises the board on the federally funded

Section 8 Rental Assistance Program; all housing-related needs of the

county’s low-income population; the neighborhood preservation needs

of the unincorporated target areas; and advises the Board of

Supervisors on the best use of available funding to accomplish the

county’s housing and community development goals.

Supervisor James Silva first appointed Wahner to the commission in

February 1999. Before his appointment, Wahner spent several years on

the Orange County Housing Authority Commission.
