Newport Harbor High’s girls volleyball team won its pool and advanced
to the semifinals Saturday in the 20-team Ann Kang Invitational at
Iolani School in Waikiki, Hawaii.
Scores of the semifinals or final were not available, but will
likely appear in Monday’s editions.
Newport began tournament competition Wednesday with a 25-12, 25-15
victory over Kalaheo followed by a 25-12, 25-20 defeat of host
Iolani. South Torrance defeated Newport, 24-22, 25-9, in the third
game of pool play. But Newport responded with a 25-23, 25-19 defeat
of Kalani in the final pool play match.
Newport defeated Clovis West, 20-25, 25-19, 25-14, in the first round of the playoffs Friday.
Corona del Mar finished second in its pool, but lost in the first
round to Punahou to fall into the loser’s bracket of the
double-elimination tournament.
Alyson Jennings, a Sailor senior-to-be, finished with 12 kills
against Clovis West while Alexis Kerns and Kiley Hall each
contributed five.
Newport faced Moanaleua in one semifinal of the winner’s bracket
while Mira Costa and Punahou squared off in the other match Saturday.
