Schools meet scholastic goals

Every school in the Laguna Beach district met the federal math and

English goals this year, according to the state Department of

Education.

More than half the schools in Orange County didn’t meet standards.

Only Los Alamitos, Irvine and Saddleback school districts scored

higher median percentages in the combined disciplines than Laguna

Beach. Laguna Beach was most comparable to Brea-Olinda, with Laguna

schools scoring slightly higher in English and slightly lower in

math.

Top of the World Elementary outscored El Morro by 11.8 percentage

points in English proficiency and 11% in math.

Community Clinic gets $10,000 grant

Laguna Beach Community Clinic has received a $10,000 grant from

the HealthCare Foundation for Orange County and the Orange County

Community Foundation as part of their Protecting Children’s Health

Initiative.

The clinic will use the funds to continue and enhance the Wellness

Academy, an after-school program for high school students that

focuses on teen health education and hygiene, including discussions

about health issues, pregnancy prevention and lifestyle decisions,

relationships.

The program reaches teens in a nonthreatening environment and

encourages questions and open discussion with the facilitators. In

addition, the clinic will facilitate a Teen Advisory Board, with

representatives from South County middle and high schools, who will

be encouraged to give input into the planning and implementation of

future teen-oriented programs.

Exchange Club names officers and directors

The Exchange Club of Laguna Beach is proud to announce its

officers and directors for the fiscal year 2003-04.

New officers and directors are Hal Werthe, president; Katy Moss,

president elect; John Bush, secretary; Sandi Werthe, treasurer; and

officers Joe Baker, Don Sherinian Rick Leckey, Pat Freeman, Mary

Greenberg, Bill Kinsey and Al Oligino.

The Exchange Club of Laguna Beach, founded in 1962, is a member of

the National Exchange Club, a national service organization whose

primary nationwide project is the prevention of child abuse. Locally,

through the past sponsorship of the Laguna Beach Film Festival as

well as through other fund-raising endeavors, the club supports both

city and countywide projects in the interest of the prevention of

child abuse including the activities conducted by the Child Abuse

Prevention Center of Orange County, Turning Point Center for

Families, the CSP Youth Shelter and the Laguna Beach Club for Kids.

Citizen Police Academy seeks program applicants

The Laguna Beach Police Department is accepting applications

through Aug. 18 for the next 12-week Citizen Police Academy program,

scheduled to begin Aug. 27.

The free classes will be held every Wednesday from 6 to 9:30 p.m.

at the Laguna Beach Police Department at 505 Forest Ave.

Instruction will include the history of the department,

investigations, traffic enforcement, gangs, narcotics, neighborhood

watch, crime prevention, the police K-9 program and volunteer

programs. Academy members will also get the chance to shoot at the

police firing range, participate in mock scenarios and take a tour of

Orange County Jail.

To be considered, applicants must be 18 or older, live or work in

Laguna Beach, have no felony convictions, no pending civil or

criminal cases with the city or its employees and no outstanding

warrants.

Applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Participants are allowed only two absences during the course.
