Reitz wins Costa Mesa tournament

Two weeks. Two tournaments. Two titles.

It’s deuces wild for Spencer Reitz.

Retiz, who will be a sophomore at Corona del Mar High in the fall,

won his second junior tennis tournament in as many weeks, capturing

the boys 18s singles title at the Costa Mesa Summer Junior Classic on

Thursday, six days after winning the War by the Shore at the Balboa

Bay Club Racquet Club.

Reitz defeated John Curtius of Rancho Palos Verdes, 6-2, 6-0, to

take home the title. In the two tournaments combined, Reitz never

lost a set.

For the rest of the Newport-Mesa players still alive in singles

matches Thursday, things didn’t go as well.

Only Corona del Mar’s Cierra Gaytan-Leach reached the semifinals,

making the girls 12s singles match by default, when No. 1 seed

Thien-Trang Nguyen was a no-show for their quarterfinal match.

Gaytan-Leach will play Kaitlyn Christian of Orange in the semis at 9

a.m. The title match is at noon.

Gaytan-Leach is also alive in doubles, playing in the 14s. She

will play in the semifinals today and a win would put her in the

finals, attempting to pull off a double. Others looking for a doubles

titles today include Newport Beach’s Sarah Geocaris and Corona del

Mar’s Katie McKitterick, who will play in the girls 16s semifinals at

1 p.m., with the finals to follow.

In the boys 12s doubles final, Chris Damion of Newport Beach and

Omeed Ghassemi will be looking for a championship. They will play at

10 a.m. in the final after defeating the top seed Thursday, 6-4, 7-6.

Ghassemi didn’t have the same success in singles, losing in the

12s semifinals to top-seeded Florante Sarmiento in straight sets.

Ghassemi was one of seven Newport-Mesa singles players to lose in the

quarterfinals or semifinals Thursday.

In girls 16s, Newport Beach’s Jill Damion, the second seed, won

her quarterfinal match, but couldn’t get by third-seeded McCall Jones

in the semifinals, losing a grueling three-setter, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. In

the same division, sixth-seed Jillian Braverman lost in the

quarterfinals to fourth-seeded Melda Tsong in straight sets.

In girls 18s, No. 3 seed Sasha Dunlap was prevented from reaching

the finals by No. 1 seed Megan Doheny.

Alexandria Walters lost in straight sets to second-seeded Samantha

Smith in the semifinals of the girls 14s singles.

In the boys 16s semifinals, No. 2 seed Fabian Matthews, only a

13-year-old, fell to sixth-seeded Ronald Chow, 6-4, 6-3.

In 16s girls doubles, Braverman and Damion will face McKitterick

and Geocaris in the semifinals today.
