Top juniors to compete for international championship

Balboa Yacht Club in Corona del Mar announced recently that yacht
clubs from the U.S. and overseas will be sending their top junior
sailors to this year’s Balboa Yacht Club Governor’s Cup.
The event, which is the premier international junior match racing
championship in the United States, will be held in the waters off
Newport Beach Aug. 13-17.
As host of the Governor’s Cup, Balboa Yacht Club invites 12 yacht
club teams of three junior sailors each to match race identical
yachts for four days of intense round-robin competition.
The “Deed of Gift” for the Governor’s Cup was granted in 1967 by
then Governor and later President Ronald Reagan. From this race
world-class sailors Paul Cayard, John Kostecki, and Gavin Brady, to
name a few, have emerged to dominate the America’s Cup and many other
international competitions.
“This race continues to be the ultimate test of junior sailing
excellence,” BYC Race Director Bill Marting said. “Last year’s
winners from the Royal Yachting Association in the United Kingdom are
not returning, so the field is wide open. With the high caliber of
the teams participating, there promises to be some exciting and close
racing.”
