Fountain Valley Pony baseball, a 14-year-old All-Star team, comprised
of several players from Huntington Beach, won the District Tournament
championship last weekend in Cypress.
The squad routed the Rancho Trabuco A team, 7-0, in the tournament
final.
The Rancho Trabuco team is managed by former California Angel
Bobby Grich.
Dane Kaylor pitched seven scoreless innings to get the win. He
struck out eight overall.
The offense was led by Billy Silvestri and Ryan Skeeks, each of
whom went three for three. Hunter White added two hits.
Jeff Spirk came up with two difficult stops in the infield and
Brian Adsit made an leaping, over-the-head catch in the outfield to
hope preserve the shutout.
“Fountain Valley played their best game of the year,” said Joe
Jordan, coach of the Pony All-Star team along with Lou Jimenez and
Steve Spirk. “I am very proud of these boys, especially how they
played against such a talented and well-managed team.”
Prior to defeating Rancho Trabuco, the All-Star team romped past
Irvine, 11-0, in a game halted by the 10-run mercy rule.
Justin De Marco scored twice and also threw an inning of shutout
ball and Greg Jimenez and Josh Jordan led the way on defense.
The All-Star team, whose members also include Brian Faust, Scott
Melchert, Brent Meschuk, Derek Moriyama, Andy Scott-Webster and
Brennden Ward, advances to compete at the Section Tournament which
begins today in Whittier.
