INSIDE

CITY HALL

Here are some decisions coming out of Tuesday’s City Council

meeting.

SANTA ANA HEIGHTS

An important first step toward building a fire station and

community center in Santa Ana Heights took place Tuesday night as the

council voted to enter into an agreement with the county development

agency that administers redevelopment money for the area.

Plans call for a community center to be built at 1200 University

Drive at the site of the YMCA. That center would be operated through

a contract with the YMCA, but would be open to all residents of

Newport Beach.

The fire station would serve areas inside and outside of the newly

annexed Santa Ana Heights areas, covering gaps in service in parts of

Fashion Island and other areas.

CELLULAR SERVICE

Councilman John Heffernan asked city staff to prepare a report on

cell phone reception in the city. The report will identify all the

areas in which cell phone service is unavailable or poor quality. The

information could allow city leaders to take the initiative in

seeking solutions, including working with cellular phone service

providers to bridge those gaps.

WHAT THEY SAID

“I think this should be conducted as a service to our residents.”

GENERAL PLAN ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The citizen committee taking part in the general plan update

process got two new members on Tuesday. The council voted to fill two

vacancies on the commission with Robert Webber and Peter Oeth. The

vacancies in the committee occurred because the city had decided to

extend the committee’s service and because some members who had

participated in the original term were unable to renew that

commitment.
