Second-seeded Garrett Snyder of Corona del Mar High advanced to the
round of 16 of the CIF Southern Section Individual Tennis
Championships, with two victories in singles Thursday at Costa Mesa
Tennis Center.
Snyder, who received a first-round bye, defeated Tony Chai of
Cerritos, 6-3, 6-3 in the second round and then knocked off Robert
Khoury of Newport Harbor, 6-4, 6-3, to move on to next round May 30
at SeaCliff Country Club in Huntington Beach.
In doubles, the Sea Kings’ team of Wesley Miller and Issei Saida
also received a first-round bye. They defeated Bryon Lee and Chris
Chacon of Hacienda Heights Wilson, 6-0, 6-2 in the second round, but
fell short in round three as Philip Hong and Steve Hong of Sunny
Hills won, 7-5, 4-6, 10-6.
Earlier this season in a team match, Miller and Saida defeated the
Lancers’ duo.
“We beat them before,” Sea Kings Coach Tim Mang said. “But they
were a bit mentally tougher than us this time around.”
