Mesa ends season with win

* Robert Rodriguez and the rest of the Costa Mesa High baseball team
ended the season in style Wednesday, sending visiting Saddleback to a
13-0 defeat in Golden West League play.
Rodriguez led off the game with a home run, his first of the year,
en route to going 2 for 4 with three runs scored for Mesa (10-16, 4-8
in league). Derek Garcia went 4 for 5 with three runs scored and an
RBI while Alex Pisarski tallied two hits in two at-bats to go with a
couple of RBIs.
The explosive Mesa offense gave starter Daniel Cooper more than
enough support for his first win of the season.
Cooper no-hit the Roadrunners (7-14, 3-9) for 3 2/3 innings before
George Vargas came on for two innings of relief. Both combined for
four strikeouts.
Mesa scored 12 runs in the first three innings, including six in
the third on five hits and two walks, chasing Saddleback starter
Abraham Lopez.
Rodriguez normally bats in the middle of the order, but Mesa Coach
Doug Deats inserted him in the leadoff spot because senior catcher
Nate Hunter was battling illness. Hunter started at catcher
Wednesday.
“Robert was the best guy to lead off and I’m glad he did,” Deats
said.
