Sea Kings dominate PCL track prelims

Corona del Mar High got a step up on the competition Monday as the

Sea Kings’ boys track and field team qualified 20 runners for

Thursday’s Pacific Coast League finals and the girls qualified 19.

Chris Ringstrom, Matt Morris and Brandon Borcoman each advanced in

the 200 and 400 meters. Kevin Artz and Mike Rudinica pulled off the

double in the 800 and 1,600 meters. Ian Alexander also qualified in

the 800 and Bo Weidner advanced in the 1,600.

In the hurdle events, Eemaan Jalili and Ross Mckee both qualified

in the 300-intermediate and 110-high hurdles.

“The boys went about business as usual,” Corona del Mar Coach Bill

Sumner said. “By qualifying so many, they eliminated some of the

competition. They are in the driver’s seat.”

The girls had several double qualifiers, showing their strength in

the distance races with four runners advancing in the 800 meters, and

six in the 1,600 meters.

Annie St. Geme, Tara Kawata and Keelan Cuyler all moved on in the

800 and 1,600 meters. Sara Claster also qualified in the 800, and

Becky Cummins, Jen Long and Ahlia Kattan rounded out the 1,600

qualifiers.

“The girls are still in a very tight race with University,” Sumner

said. “We probably have the edge in the track events, but Uni has the

edge in field events.”

Whitney Weidner advanced in the 100 and 200. Melissa Swigert and

Kelly Morgan qualified in the 200 and 400. Stefanie Sitzer will

compete in both hurdle events in the finals, with Norlyn Corpus

joining her in the 300 hurdles. The finals will be Thursday at 5 p.m.

at Irvine High.
