‘Eaters outlast Cal Poly

UC Irvine sophomore third baseman Brett Dalton walked with the bases
loaded in the 13th inning to force in the winning run in the
Anteaters’ 6-5 Big West Conference victory over visiting Cal Poly San
Luis Obispo Sunday.
A one-out double by sophomore designated hitter Gregg Wallis
sparked the winning rally for the Anteaters (18-28, 7-8 in the Big
West). Senior outfielder Jon Horwitz beat out a bunt single and Matt
Falk was walked to load the bases and set up a potential force at
home.
After evening the count at 1-1, Cal Poly reliever Tony Saipe, who
had retired the side in order after coming on in the 12th, threw
three straight balls to give the Anteaters their second straight win
after they had lost the series opener Friday night.
Cal Poly led, 2-0, after the first inning, but had to rally to
erase a 5-2 UCI lead after the fourth.
The Mustangs (23-23, 5-10) did just that with two runs in the
fifth and one in the sixth, the latter on a home run by Alex
Chavarria.
But then the UCI bullpen shut the door to take senior starter Paul
French (seven hits and five earned runs allowed in six innings) off
the hook.
Sophomore right-hander Michael Koehler worked 3 1/3 innings of
shutout relief, allowing just two hits and fanning two, before senior
lefty Keith Raulinaitis got the second out of the 10th. Sophomore
right-hander Steve Schroer then took over and surrendered just one
hit in 3 1/3 shutout innings, fanning five. Schroer picked up the
victory to improve to 2-1.
Freshman first baseman Mark Wagner went 3 for 6 with two doubles
and scored UCI’s fifth run in the fourth on a single by junior second
baseman Matt Fisher.
Fisher, freshman outfielder Gary Dudrey and freshman shortstop
Kyle Ryckebosch each added two hits to the Anteaters’ 14-hit attack.
Dudrey walked three times as Cal Poly pitchers issued 11 bases on
balls.
UCI hurlers walked just one and struck out 14 Mustangs.
UCI visits Arizona State Tuesday for a 7 p.m. nonconference game.
