Marine sergeant visits Woodland kindergartners

Marine Sgt. Aaron Wintterle, a 23-year-old Marine sent home after

being shot in the mouth while fighting in Baghdad, visited a

kindergarten class at Woodland Elementary School in Costa Mesa on

Wednesday. The students, who had heard about Wintterle from Rebecca

Olsen, their teacher and his aunt, presented him with a book with

words of gratitude and colorful pictures.

Measure A construction at seven Newport-Mesa Unified schools has

begun. The cost is about $21 million for work at four Costa Mesa

schools -- Woodland, Whittier and Kaiser elementary schools, and Back

Bay/Monte Vista High School -- and three in Newport Beach --

Mariners, Newport Heights and Harbor View Elementary, which broke

ground nearly three weeks ago.

Vanguard University broke ground Tuesday on the first of eight new

buildings scheduled for construction before 2010. The new building,

the Heath Academic Center, will to house the university’s religious

and business studies.
