The Corona del Mar High boys tennis team, unmatched as the 2003
campaign moves forward, gobbled up another opponent Monday as the
host Sea Kings defeated Laguna Beach, 18-0, in a Pacific Coast League
make-up match.
Coach Tim Mang’s Sea Kings, ranked No. 1 in Orange County and CIF
Southern Section Division I, improved to 16-0, 4-0 in league. Laguna
Beach fell to 1-3 in league.
“I plan on being in the (CIF) Finals,” Mang said. “We’ve beaten
everybody [in our division] except for one team and that’s Harvard
Westlake, and (the Wolverines) finished fifth in our tournament [the
CdM National High School Invitational last month].”
CdM senior and University of Texas-bound Garrett Snyder, who
normally plays No. 1 singles for the Sea Kings, played doubles at No.
1 with sophomore Sean Pham, while sophomore Spencer Reitz, senior
Bryan Warsaw and senior Issei Saida handled the singles duties for
Corona del Mar.
“My top guys have always been very good,” Mang said. “They always
stack on us in the doubles, so my doubles are bound to get better.
They’re usually playing the top singles players in the doubles. Other
teams throw their top singles players in the top doubles teams. I’m
sure that will be the case any time we play a tight team ... Our
closest match was 12-6, and that was against Peninsula, one of the
top teams, and they put their No. 1 player [Pat Dobson] in doubles
against us.”
With sophomore sensation Carsten Ball sitting this dance out, the
Sea Kings swept across the board, including at No. 2 doubles with
junior Brennan Roberts and freshman Robert Koury and at No. 3 with
sophomores Nicholas Gingold and Alex Nguyen.
“We’re still No. 1 in the state, according to our national
tournament, which had the top three teams in the state and we went
undefeated in our national invitational,” said Mang, whose team will
travel to Tesoro today at 3 p.m.
