Poia earns all-state honors

Freshman outside hitter Poyer Poia was selected by the Orange Empire
Conference coaches to the all-state tournament team for his
performance in the Orange Coast College men’s volleyball team’s run
to the state semifinals, where it was defeated by three-time
defending champion L.A. Pierce in five games. Poia led the Bucs in
kills with 21 against Pierce and El Camino (23) during the playoffs.
Poia, who also had 17 digs against Pierce, along with OCC freshman
setter Mike Murphy were selected to the OEC first team. Murphy
tallied 41 assists and three service aces in the state semifinal.
Sophomore opposite Paul Pomroy, freshman middle blocker Levi
Luster and sophomore libero Kaione Scott garnered second-team
all-conference honors. Scott had 12 digs against Pierce.
Freshman middle blocker Dane Gilliam earned honorable mention.
The Pirates (17-7, 11-5 in the OEC) finished second to Golden West
in the conference.
