Orange Coast captures Palmer Cup

* ROWING: Orange Coast College won the varsity eight final and went
on to capture the Palmer Cup, which goes to the program with the most
overall points, at the Newport Regatta Sunday.
The Pirates’ winning eight, including Ryan Costelloe, Chris
Lentini, Oscar Correa, Wes Temple, John Zeiser, Will Harris, Tom
Redoutey, Nick D’Antoni and coxswain Kate Mead, covered the
2,000-meter course in 5:51.9, nearly two seconds faster than
runner-up Long Beach State.
USC was third and UC Irvine finished sixth.
OCC also won the novice four with J.T. Eger, Jake Carr, Fred
Fielding Russ McShane and their coxswain, whose name was not
available, posting a time of 6:54.7. UCI was third in that race.
OCC also won the novice eight, as Matt Chapman, Zack Papas,
McShane, Jeff Urelland, Carr, Eger, Brian Moran, Fielding and
coxswain Ashley Thomas topped the six-boat field in 6:01.7. UCI was
fifth in that race.
UCI won the second varsity eight, similar to junior varsity
division, with a time of 6:10.9, topping runner-up OCC (6:11.1).
Tars’ boys, girls second
* SWIMMING: The Newport Harbor High boys and girls swimming teams
both finished second at the Palm Springs Invitational, completed
Saturday.
Sailors Hayley Peirsol, Nicole Mackey and Mai Tajima combined to
win five of the eight individual girls events.
Perisol won the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.65) and the 500
freestyle (4:56.22), while Mackey won the 100 butterfly (57.29) and
the 100 breaststroke (1:06.37). Tajima topped the field in the 100
backstroke (1:00.53) and was second in the 200 free (1:58.36).
Andrew Cole (53.67 in the 100 back) and Ross Sinclair (1:51.42 in
the 200 free) posted runner-up finishes to hightlight the Sailor boys
participants.
San Clemente won the boys and girls team title.
Northridge bests UCI
* BASEBALL: The UC Irvine baseball team was defeated by visiting
Cal State Northridge, 13-7, Sunday, in the finale of a three-game Big
West Conference baseball series.
Northridge (11-35, 5-7 in conference) built a 9-2 lead in the
first three innings and held on, though the Anteaters (17-27, 5-7)
scored four in the sixth to pull within 11-7.
Northridge, which won two of three in the series, bashed 18 hits
to UCI’s 13. Gregg Wallis went 3 for 4 to pace the hosts, who also
received two hits from Jon Horwitz, Brett Dalton, Matt Falk and Gary
Dudrey.

CdM settles for fourth
* VOLLEYBALL: The Corona del Mar High finished fourth in the Santa
Barbara Tournament of Champions, completed Saturday.
The Sea Kings lost in the championship semifinals to Buchanan of
Fresno, 15-4, 15-9, 15-4, then were outlasted by another Fresno
school, Bullard, 15-8, 14-16, 14-16, 15-8, 15-6, in the third-place
match.
Senior middle blocker Eric Jones had 33 kills in the two matches
to lead the Sea Kings (13-10).
Miles Yourman had 18 kills against Bullard, while Tom Welch and
Kevin Welch had 14 apiece and setter Greg Gabriel amassed 71 assists.
NAC’s Lofgren honored
* ROWING: Newport Aquatic Center junior rowing standout Esther
Lofgren, a senior at Newport Harbor High, has been named to the
scholastic honor roll by U.S. Rowing.
The program recognized 19 seniors who have excelled in both
academics and rowing. Those selected must be U.S. Rowing members,
have rowed or coxed at least one year, and successfully competed at
or above the league or regional level.
Lofgren, who boasts a 4.0 grade-point average this year, is
captain of the NAC junior team.
