Breakers fall to Sea Kings

Mike Sciacca

Things looked promising Tuesday for the Laguna Beach High baseball

team after its first at-bat against Pacific Coast League rival Corona

del Mar.

Taking a 2-0 lead on the road in a key league clash was a big

boost to the Breakers but not quite big enough as the Sea Kings came

storming back and went on to record a 9-3 home field victory.

Laguna, now 3-5 in league and 5-10 overall, got its two,

first-inning runs on Conley Sampson’s two-run home run.

Corona del Mar scored once in the first inning on Nick Karpe’s

home run, then took the lead for good in the second by scoring twice

more, one run coming on a Wes Presson homer.

The Sea Kings scored six runs more runs between the fourth and

sixth innings to take command, 9-2.

Corona del Mar got nine hits off Laguna pitchers Grant Harrell,

Chris Stansbury and Sampson.

Laguna, which has lost twice this season to Corona del Mar, gets

one more shot at the Sea Kings when it plays host CdM today at 3:15

p.m.

In an earlier game, Laguna fell to Rancho Alamitos, 3-2, at the

Newport Elks Tournament.

The Breakers took a 2-0 first inning lead but the Vaqueros rallied

for a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to pull out the win

despite being outhit, 7-5, by Laguna.

In softball action Tuesday, Calvary Chapel routed visiting Laguna,

16-0.

The Eagles broke the game open right off the bat with an 11-run,

first inning outburst.

The game was called after five innings due to the mercy rule.

The loss left the Breakers with a 2-2 league record, 7-8 overall.
