Pirates win twice in Sequoias tournament

Orange Coast College used its bats to climb back to a .500 record

after scoring 16 runs for two wins in 14 innings of baseball amid

rain in the College of the Sequoias Tournament Thursday.

The Pirates (17-17-1) received a solid pitching performance from

Kyle Allen to win the first game, 4-3, over Cabrillo, in a game that

ended after eight innings because of the rain, OCC Coach John

Altobelli said.

Allen improved his pitching record to 6-3 after his complete-game

performance that came with seven strikeouts. He allowed one earned

run on six hits. Pirate sophomore Ryan Mathes smacked a solo home run

in the fourth inning.

OCC exploded for 17 hits in a 12-5 victory over West Hills, and

the game was called after six innings. Sophomore John Grant went 4

for 4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. He hammered a three-run

home run in the second innin.

UCI loses third straight

STOCKTON -- University of the Pacific scored three runs in the

bottom of the first and went on to hand the UC Irvine baseball team a

5-3 loss in the Big West Conference series opener Thursday.

UCI (15-24, 3-4 in conference) was the first to get on the board

on Mark Wagner’s RBI single to score Jon Horwitz, who had singled,

advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and third on a wild pitch.
