The visiting UC Irvine baseball team erased a 3-0 deficit with one
run in the eighth and two in the ninth, but Fresno State answered
with the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth to claim a 4-3
nonconference victory Tuesday.
Anteater senior left fielder Chris Klemm homered in the eighth and
freshman right fielder Matt Falk belted a pinch-hit dinger to pull
the visitors within 3-2 in the ninth. Sophomore catcher Matt Wehrun
followed with a game-tying homer, but Bulldog sophomore reliever Chad
Edwards, the seventh hurler used by the Western Athletic Conference
representative, ended the threat.
Fresno State (21-17), however, sent the home crowd away happy as
senior center fielder Scott Beshears drilled a 2-2 Mike Davern pitch
over the right-field fence.
Wehrun, whose home run was his first this spring, went 2 for 3 to
pace the Anteaters’ seven-hit attack.
Jon Horwitz, Greg Wallis and Matt Fisher also had hits for th
visitors, who fell to 15-23.
UCI continues its road trip Thursday, beginning a three-game
series at Big West rival University of the Pacific.
