Kaiser Elementary’s third and fourth-grade C division basketball team
ended its season 10-0, capping it with a run through the Southern
California Municipal Athletic Federation Orange County Tournament.
Kaiser faced California, also from Costa Mesa, in the final game.
The game featured several lead changes and was tied with one final
possession for Kaiser.
Christopher Whitelegge broke free to make a basket to seal the
33-31 win.
Kaiser defeated Buena Park, 30-9, in its second game but faced
stiff competition from a team from Newport Beach in the first game.
The game went to the final seconds of overtime before Kaiser
pulled it out, 31-30.
California (8-1-1) began the tournament beating Cypress, 41-33,
and followed that up with a 26-16 triumph over Garden Grove.
California and Kaiser were the only two teams from Costa Mesa’s
Recreation Division to make the tournament, held March 15-16.
