Breakers spike Calvary Chapel

Team balance played a key role Tuesday for Laguna Beach High in its

Pacific Coast League boys’ volleyball match with host Calvary Chapel

as the Breakers posted a 16-14, 15-3, 15-6 victory.

Talan Torriero had 10 kills and five blocks, Trey Chapel finished

with eight kills and led the team in digs with 13, Luke Morris had 11

digs, Matt Anderson a team-best 11 kills and Clark Olson topped the

Breakers with 33 assists.

The victory improved Laguna’s PCL record to 2-1 and overall mark

to 3-4.

The Breakers this week were ranked fifth in the latest CIF

Southern Section Division II poll.

In PCL boys’ tennis action played Tuesday, visiting Laguna downed

Tesoro, 12-6.

The Breakers won all nine sets in doubles play and three of nine

sets in singles.

Dieter Schmitz and Andrew Ghenender set the tone at No. 1 doubles,

winning 6-1, 6-0, 6-1. Ivan Kovacevic and Kyle Paxton followed at No.

2 winning 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, the triumph moving the doubles tandem’s

record to 22-5.

Jeff Ferguson, who normally plays singles, joined Jeremy McKiernan

at No. 3 doubles and the pair swept with scores of 7-6, 6-0, 6-1.

In singles play, Eric Tran, Lincoln Berger and Michael Codinin

each defeated Tesoro’s No. 3 player, Michael Fink, to secure the

victory.

In PCL baseball action Tuesday, Calvary Chapel jumped out to an

8-1 lead over host Laguna, then held off the Breakers to record an

8-5 victory.

Laguna had taken a 1-0 first inning lead on junior Conley

Sampson’s home run.

In the sixth, Chris Stansbury hit a two-run homer to bring the

Breakers to within 8-3.

In girls’ water polo, Laguna senior Annie Preble was featured in

the “Faces in the Crowd” section of Sports Illustrated for setting an

Orange County record for goals scored in a single season.
