Red Sox roll out the big bats

The Red Sox received extra-base hits from the first four batters in

the lineup and went on to an 8-2 victory over the Mets in Newport

Harbor Baseball Association Bronco Division (11-12-year-olds) play.

Alex Rios continued his hot hitting, going 3 for 3, including a

home run and two doubles while scoring twice and collecting three

RBIs.

Leadoff hitter Arturo Vazquez went 2 for 3 with a triple, two runs

scored and an RBI while throwing three shut out innings with six

strikeouts. Daniel Norris followed with three more innings of

scoreless relief, striking out eight. At the plate, Norris had a

double, two RBIs and also scored twice.

Josh Bowman laced a triple to drive in a run and also scored while

Adam Lagor ripped a single up the middle to spark a four-run inning.

Lagor also scored a run.

Trevor Noon hit the ball sharply to center field and also came

around to score.

Jay Ordaz and Max Jolliffe each made strong fielding plays for the

Red Sox.

The Mets received strong pitching from Shane Cardin and Alex

Maddox.

In Mustang (9-10-year-olds) play:

* Rangers 11, Astros 4

Ryan Davis led a 12-hit Ranger hitting attack with three of his

own in the win. Blair Luchs and Cole Jackson both singled and doubled

while Charlie Massingill singled twice for the Rangers

Luchs and Michael Salam quieted the Astro bats with four innings

of no-hit baseball, striking out 11 of the 12 batters they faced.

Grant Fujii, Charlie Hawthorne and A.J. Swies each tallied hits in

a fourth-inning rally that plated all four Astro runs.

* Red Sox 8, Astros 7

Hayden Cornwell hit his second home run of the game in the bottom

of the fifth inning to lead the Red Sox. Cornwell went 3 for 3.

Dylan Milker and Nick McCann each went 2 for 3 to contribute to

the Red Sox’ assault.

The Astros came back after spotting the Red Sox a 5-0 lead, tying

the game in the top of the fifth inning on Aaron White’s two-run

triple. White went 3 for 3.

Conor Sweeney held the Sox to two runs over three innings as A.J.

Swies, Dustin Metzger and Fritz Howser each tallied hits.

* Diamondbacks 5, Rangers 0

Jamie Davis, Blake Bell and Zack Beaudin combined for a no-hit

shutout.

Grant Frazier, Christopher Sheppard, Forrest Gourley, Charles

Coakley, Bell and Beaudin each tallied hits and RBIs.

Luchs struck out seven with Tyler Kiehnle also pitching solidly.

In Pinto (7-8-year-olds) action:

* Martin Jr. Najera, Duke Morales and Spencer Buchanan all had

three hits for the Red Sox against the Rangers. Najera tallied a

double and two singles.

Fine defensive plays were made by Timothy McGetrick, Quinci

Holgate and Bryan Shollin. Austin Smith, Robert Alexander, Estevan

Muniz also collected hits for the Red Sox.

* Astros’ pitchers T.J. Eleinko, Blake Pender and Jake Prater were

backed up by solid hitting and base running from Conner Moore, Jack

Ortlieb, Chase Whiting and Wyatt Muller. Moore, Muller and Ortlieb

each tallied hits as well.

The Cubs received strong performances on offense and defense from

Max Meisenheimer and Brandon Metzger, who along with True Tamplin,

Dayton Cribbs and Elijah Long, combined for a big second inning.

Will Laidlaw also delivered a strong defensive effort.

In Shetland National (6-year-olds) play:

* The Cubs and Cardinals battled it out at Newport Heights School.

Julien Marchese made strong stops at both pitcher and left field

while also smashing a hit into center field.

Solid hits toward second base and the pitcher were made by John

Smith, alongside Keola Kanaeholo, who belted two hits toward

shortstop and third base.

Jeffrey Secinski added to the effort with a base hit by third base

and made a put out at the same bag.

In Pony play:

* NHBA River Dogs 6, Corona del Mar Giants 1

Nathan Todd pitched a complete game with 15 strikeouts to lead the

NHBA River Dogs over the visiting Corona del Mar Giants. Todd allowed

only one run on two hits over seven innings. Of 69 pitches he threw

54 for strikes.

The Giants’ starter was wild in the bottom of the first inning,

walking three batters and hitting two more to give up four runs.

Jackson Massingill hit his first home run of the season, a solo

shot, and was joined in the RBI category by Matt Bryant, Brett Adams

and Dan Winkle, who each knocked in one run.

Todd doubled and singled while Bryant [2 for 2] and Glen

Christensen [2 for 3] each contributed to the hitting attack. Winkle

walked twice in two at-bats.

* Newport Harbor Pelicans 11, Costa Mesa Angels 1

Garrett Gordon pitched five innings, allowing one run and three

hits while striking out eight batters. John Swift pitched the final

inning allowing no runs and striking out one for Newport Harbor,

which also received strong defense from catcher Erik Bonn and

shortstop Chris LoMenzo.

Kyle Rohan went 3 for 4 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs

scored while Gordon got a hit and collected four RBIs. Freddie

Randall and Dusty Campbell also got key hits and an RBI each in a

three-run fifth inning.

LoMenzo hit two sharp singles to left and scored three times.
