Estancia High freshman pitcher Joanna Danner tosses a one-hitter
while her defense backs her up in a 1-0 victory over rival Costa Mesa
in a Pacific Coast League softball game. Sophomore Stephanie Danner
belts a two-out shot to right field to score Cari Frisker, who had
tripled. Mesa hurler Kristin Chisholm allows just three hits and
shuts the Eagles down after the second inning.
In an upset, the Newport Harbor High boys swim team defeats El
Toro, 97-75, in a Sea View League dual meet to improve to 2-1.
Sailors Coach Brian Kreutzkamp says, “I don’t think we’ve won more
than one Sea View League dual meet the last three or four years.”
Harbor enjoys an 87-71 lead going into the 400-yard freestyle relay,
but Newport’s Kevin Becker, who wins two other events, passes his
Charger challenger in the anchor leg to seal the victory. Senior
Jason Arrow also posts two wins for the Sailors in the 200 individual
medley (2:10.39) and the 100 breaststroke (1:05.89).
Three birdies on the par-35 course at Newport Beach Country Club
for Corona del Mar High sophomore Innes Macdonald gives him medalist
honors in CdM’s 191-206 boys golf victory over Back Bay rival Newport
Harbor in Sea View League play. Macdonald and Chad Towersey finish 14
strokes ahead of their Sailor counterparts to lead CdM (7-1, 5-0 in
league). Towersey cards a 2-over 37 to claim second place behind
Macdonald’s 36.

Costa Mesa High senior Olivia DiCamilli, who leads the team to its
most successful season ever, is named CIF Southern Section Division
III Player of the Year. The 5-foot-10 forward leads Mesa to section
and regional titles before the Mustangs fall in the state title game.
She is joined on the first team by Newport Harbor senior Michaela
Ross. Costa Mesa’s Heather Robinson is a second-team pick. The San
Diego State-bound DiCamilli is named All-CIF four years, which
includes a pair of Southern Section championships and back-to-back
PCL MVP awards. She averages 22.2 points, 11.5 rebounds and four
assists per game, capping her career with a district- and
school-record 2,220 points.
