UCI’s Curtis goes 13-21/4 in pole vault

UC Irvine sophomore Erin Curtis broke her own school record and set a

meet record in winning the pole vault with a mark of 13-2 1/4 in the

Big West Challenge Track & Field Cup Saturday afternoon.

She also won the 100 meters in 12.02, and finished second in the

200 meters (24.66). Suzanne Purmort won the 400-meter hurdles in

1:02.65, while Annmarie Turpin won the high jump at 5-7 and Jessica

Stafford was second at 5-5 3/4. Stafford won the javelin throw with a

toss of 127-8.

Other second-place finishes for the Anteaters included Lauren

Adams in the 400 meters (57.80), Cathy Picha in the 800 meters

(2:15.88), Wendy Chan in the 1,500 meters (4:36.73).

Gladys Iwuaba of Long Beach State broke her own meet record in the

triple jump with a mark of 40-9 1/2 and Amy Haapenen from UC Santa

Barbara established a meet record in the shot put at 46-0 1/2. UCSB’s

Katie Appenrodt won the 1,500 meters in 4:35.88 and the 3,000 meters

in 9:51.12.

Long Beach State won the women’s championship with 165 points, Cal

State Fullerton was second with 161 1/2, UCI was third with 160 and

UC Santa Barbara fourth with 145 1/2.

The 49ers’ Stephanie Sampson won the hammer throw with a mark of

180-2 to break her own meet record from last year, and she also

captured first in the discus throw at 151-0.

In the men’s events, UC Irvine picked up second-place finishes

from Kenny Vinh in the 110-meter high hurdles (14.81), Scott Jarvis in the 400-meter hurdles (54.55), Santosh Swamidass in the high jump

(6-8), Aaron Corbett in the pole vault (15-7) and Jon Stewart in the

javelin throw (184-3).

The 49er men finished with 194 points, UCI and UC Santa Barbara

tied for second with 147 points each and Cal State Fullerton was

fourth with 146.

Long Beach State’s Cory Loebl won three events: setting a meet

record in the hammer throw with a mark of 199-2, plus finishing first

in the shot put (55-7 3/5) and the discus throw (183-0). The 49ers’

Ryan Kroll won the 200 meters (21.44), the 400 meters (48.44), plus

anchored the winning 1,600-meter relay that recorded a time of

3:18.93.

Other meet records established on the men’s side were by Cal State

Fullerton ‘s Joe Thomas in the triple jump as he bettered his record

from two years ago with a mark of 49-10 1/2, and Long Beach State’s

Shingo Suzumura in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.41.

All four teams compete in the California/Nevada Championships in

San Diego April 11-12.
