Eagles prevail, big time

Estancia High senior Jason Cassidy shot 2-under 33 to earn medalist

honors Thursday as the Eagles defeated Costa Mesa, 187-222, in a

nine-hole Golden West League boys golf match on the par-35 Mesa Linda

course at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club.

After Cassidy in the scoring column for Estancia were Ryan Brown

(36), Marcus Sostak (38), a freshman, Jason Les (38) and Austin Serr

(42).

The Eagles improved to 7-1, 4-0 in league.

Costa Mesa, led by Brian Beach’s 1-under 34 and Nick Zimmerman’s

38, saw its record fall to 3-6, 1-3.

The Eagles play a tri-match Monday against Beverly Hills and Oak

Park at Sterling Hills in Camarillo. Coach Art Perry said his team is

playing as many matches as possible at Mesa Linda, site of this

year’s league finals (May 5-6).

CdM, in a breeze

* Corona del Mar High battled through brisk winds and choppy

greens to post a 198-219 victory over Pacific Coast League foe

Calvary Chapel in boys golf action Thursday at Rancho San Joaquin

Golf Course in Irvine.

CdM’s Nick Sherman won medalist honors with a 1-over 37 and was

followed by Tim Frohling (38), Rob Ury (40), Ben Tilsen (41) and Brad

Chamberlin (42).

“They had just plugged and sanded the greens last week so it was

real tough,” said Corona del Mar Coach Mike Starkweather about the

course conditions.

CdM improves to 7-3, 5-0 in league.

Pemstein medalist

* Newport Harbor High sophomore Davis Pemstein shared medalist

honors, but the Sailors’ boys golf team lost to Villa Park, as the

squads wrapped up a nonleague match with nine-hole play at Big Canyon

Country Club.

Thursday’s match was the second half of the match that started

March 10 at Green River Golf Club. Villa Park came in under Newport

Harbor, 203-212, Thursday and won the match, 400-422.

Pemstein shot 1-over par-36 Thursday and had a 39 from Green River

for 76, matching the score of Villa Park’s Steve Gibson.
