Crude oil discovered on city beach
An estimated one-half gallon of crude oil was found south of the
Huntington Beach Pier, near Lifeguard Tower No. 5 on the city beach
last week.
A Marine Safety officer spotted what he called a “tar ball”
washing up on the beach at 2:15 p.m. Monday, March 24.
Fire and police departments were both called to investigate. The
police helicopter flew an observer over the area in an aim to
determine the extent and source of the material. The Coast Guard and
the California Division of Fish and Game were also notified.
The source of the release has not been identified.
HBTV-3 airing disaster video
Surf City’s local TV station is broadcasting a video put together
by the city that educates residents on how to prepare for a terrorist
attack.
The new disaster preparedness video, titled “Before It’s Too
Late,” instructs viewers on how to form a family plan, reduce hazards
at home and prepare the home for a major disaster.
The 10-minute segment on terrorism awareness is accompanied by
preparedness strategies and information on floods, fires,
earthquakes, Africanized honey bees and tsunamis.
The Huntington Beach Emergency Services Office and the Central Net
Fire Training Center coordinated and produced the video. Presenters
include Police Chief Kenneth Small, Acting Fire Chief Duane Olson,
Marine Safety Chief Kyle Lindo, Fire Division Chief Jacques Pelletier
and Emergency Services Coordinator Glorria Morrison.
HBTV is channel 3 in Huntington Beach.
