Would you believe ... 124-2?

The Costa Mesa High girls track and field team’s Golden West League

matchup with host Orange seemed more like an intrasquad meet for the

Mustangs Thursday.

The Mesa girls defeated the Panthers, 124-2, winning every event,

and sweeping all but two. The Mustangs’ boys squad was a bit

surprised by its 72-53 loss to Orange.

On the girls side, seniors Sharon Day (high jump and 400 meters)

and Beverly Aina (shot put and discus), along with juniors Christine

Bjelland (1,600 and 3,200) and Vicki Pham (110 hurdles and triple

jump) doubled for the Mustangs, who recorded their second straight

win in the Golden West League.

Freshman Jazzy Day (800), Cassey Brick (300 hurdles) and Rhondi

Naff (long jump) also won for Costa Mesa.

Sharon Day said the meet was easy because Orange did not have that

many athletes on its team.

Coach Glenn Mitchell said the Panthers’ squad consisted of less

than 10 girls, and most of them ran the distance races.

Orange finished third in the 1,600 and third in the 400.

Mitchell also said the Orange boys coach was shocked when he

learned the Panthers defeated the Mustangs.

Costa Mesa (1-1 in league) won two events, the 300 hurdles by

senior Zach Powell and the 110 hurdles by junior Marvin Ramirez.
