OCC clinches crown

* TENNIS: Orange Coast College’s women’s tennis team dealt host

Saddleback a 6-3 Orange Empire Conference loss Thursday, keyed by a

1-2-3 sweep in singles to improve to 11-1, 9-0 in the OEC.

With the victory, Coach Janice Maran’s Pirates reclaimed the OEC

championship. OCC won the conference title in 2001, and Saddleback

won it last year.

“The last time we played (the Gauchos) we won, 5-4, but this time

the girls really rose to the occasion,” Maran said. “Ashley Nelson

had lost to Annette Beebe in straight sets in the last match, but she

was determined and anxious to win (Thursday). I’m really proud of all

them.”

Saddleback fell to 6-3 in the OEC.
