CdM third at Capo

Two first-place finishes paced the Corona del Mar High girls swim

team in the Capistrano Valley Relay finals at Saddleback College

Saturday.

CdM earned third place out of 16 teams entered. Irvine won the

championship.

The CdM team of Brittney Bowlus, Vivian Liao, Danielle Carlson,

Christina Hewko, Katya Eadington and Jordan Anae took the top spot in

the 6 by 50-yard freestyle event in 2:45.44. Liao, Bowlus, Ann

Winners and Anae won the 4 by 100 free in 3:44.16.

In both wins, Bowlus swam leadoff and clocked qualifying times for

the CIF Division II preliminaries, said CdM Coach Doug Volding. The

UCLA-bound senior raced to a 54.25 in her leg of the 100 free.

Winners, Niki Hendrickson, Flo Rodenhuis and Jackie McCoy took

third in the 4 by 50 breaststroke (2:33.47).

Other results for CdM include: fourth place in both the 4 by 50

back (2:00.72) and the 4 by 50 butterfly (2:04.95). Christina Hewko,

named Pacific Coast League Most Valuable Player for a second

consecutive season after leading CdM to a repeat CIF championship

when it beat Villa Park, 10-5, March 1, Liao, Bilder and Jessica

Harkins led the back, with Hendrickson, Eadington, Kelli Kline and

Natalie Wayte pacing the fly.

Hewko, Eadington, McCoy and Bowlus swam to fifth in the 200 medley

relay and finished eighth in the 400 individual medley with Winners,

Hendrickson, Kathryn Bilder and Amy Strack teaming up. First-team

all-PCL selections for water polo include Carlson and Bowlus.

Harkins, bound for Princeton, made the second-team.

Despite missing the first event -- the 4 x 100 IM -- CdM’s

frosh-soph team took first place at the relays Saturday.

CdM finished third in three events: the 4 x 50 back (2:07.17), the

400 free relay (4:02) and the 200 medley relay (2:06.28). Ashley

Chandler, Alyssa Jones, Tamara De La Loza and Camille Hewko led the

back while Chandler, Brittany Fullen (second-team all-league), Amy

Zucker and Lauren McAdams raced in the 400 free. Chandler, Camille

Hewko, Whitney Caskey and McAdams led the medley relay.

CdM finished second in the 6 x 50 free with Fullen, Zucker, De La

Loza and Briana Galloway, Katie Kubas and McAdams finishing in

2:49.45. Camille Hewko, also a second-team all-league pick for water

polo this season, Bree Schuman, Lemmerman and Kubas took third in the

4 x 50 breaststroke. CdM finished seventh in the 4 x 50 fly.

CdM hosts University March 26.
