UCI students host ‘Top Ramen Cook-Off’

The Associated Students of UC Irvine held a “Top Ramen Cook-Off”

to give students a taste of one of the few dishes they’ll be able to

afford thanks to tuition hikes. Tuition will increase $135 for the

spring term 2003 -- and may significantly increase again -- Students

have already begun to see cutbacks in of some of their services and

outreach programs. The Associated Students at UCI held the event on

Thursday to raise awareness among students, protest the increase in

tuition and get the attention of the UC Regents.

UC Irvine’s Henry Samueli School of Engineering celebrated

National Engineers Week, better known as E-Week, for its 30th year.

E-Week consisted of more than 20 competitions, such as an egg drop

from a 10-story tower and paper airplane competitions. E-Week is

sponsored by UCI’s Engineering Student Council.

The Academic Performance Index for all schools within the

Newport-Mesa Unified School District, released Thursday, showed that

most schools maintained their ranking despite higher requirements.

The new base API included results from the California Standards Tests

for mathematics, English-Language Arts, social science and California

High School Exit Exams at each of the high schools. While 18 schools

maintained their rankings, four schools -- College Park, Paularino

and Woodland elementary and Orange Coast Middle College High schools

-- improved their statewide ranking. Seven schools -- Adams,

California, Whittier, Wilson elementary schools and Costa Mesa,

Estancia and Newport Harbor high schools -- slipped in the rankings.
