Corona del Mar High’s boys soccer team opens the CIF Division II
Playoffs today on the Sea Kings’ campus with a 3 p.m. matchup with
Century League representative El Dorado in what appears to be one of
the more attractive first-round games of the day.
Corona del Mar, 16-5-2 and the No. 1 entry from the Pacific Coast
League, enters with the favorite’s tag after sharing the PCL crown
with Northwood.
Coach Pat Callaghan’s Sea Kings are one a five-game winning
streak, including shutout victories over Tesoro, University and
Calvary Chapel, capped by the 2-1 victory over Northwood in the
regular-season finale.
Victory would send the Sea Kings into Wednesday’s second round
against the winner of host Riverside Poly (19-4-3) and Murrieta
Valley (11-5-8). Riverside Poly is the No. 4 seed in the 32-team
eliminations.
Newport Harbor, meanwhile, takes its 8-6-4 record and No. 2 Sea
View League credentials to Santa Monica, where the Vikings of the Bay
League await with a 16-8 record. It is also scheduled for 3 p.m.
The Sailors are working on a five-game unbeaten streak.
St. Francis (22-5) or Agoura (17-5-3) await today’s winner in the
second round.
In Division VI first-round play, Sage Hill School’s boys take an
8-5-5 record to St. Bernard, Camino Real League champions, at 3.
* In girls water polo, Newport Harbor’s Sea View League
runners-up, seeded No. 2 in Division I circles, won the flip and will
host the Montebello Oilers at noon today.
Montebello, 22-5 and the Almont League champion, eliminated
Capistrano Valley, 13-7, in the first round. The Sailors await with
22-5 credentials.
Corona del Mar, top-seeded in Division II, takes its 23-5 record
to Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach where the Sea Kings will duel
El Seguno (23-6).
CdM’s record includes three losses to Division I power Foothill, a
split with Back Bay rival Newport Harbor and a 2-1 edge over Santa
Margarita.
* In CIF Division IV-A boys basketball, Steve Keith takes his
Sage Hill School Lightning to the Westside Jewish Community Center
for an 8 o’clock second-round matchup with Yeshiva. It is at 5870
West Olympic Blvd. In Los Angeles.
