HB Bombers open All-Star play with two wins

The HB Bombers, a boys’ AYSO Region 56 Under-9 Division All-Star

team, opened All-Star competition with two victories at Taft School

in Orange.

The Bombers began the tournament by edging Region 143, 2-1.

A Sloan Varing goal gave the Bombers an early 1-0 lead, but Region

143 came back with a second-period goal to gain a 1-1 tie.

That score stood until the fourth quarter, when Kevin Caskey took

a well-executed pass and kicked in the winning goal.

In their second game of the day, the Bombers had an easier time

with Region 5, winning by a 6-2 count.

Madison Hayden led all scorers with two goals and Varing, Dillon

Brown, Austin DiCambio and Jachin Hamborg all scored once.

Michael Chrislock, Ryan Shean, Javis Sing and Hayden Fransciscus

turned in strong defensive efforts.

Garrett Haar and Blake Mooney shared goaltending duties for

Bombers coaches Ron Varing and John Caskey.

HB United 4, Red Devils 4

Tyler Bigenho’s late goal capped a frantic rally as HB United, a

Gold All-Star team out of Region 56, earned a tie to remain the lone

undefeated team in pool play.

The Red Devils, out of Region 517, had taken a 2-0, and, after HB

United’s Sam Hunt posted a goal, scored twice more to up their lead

to 4-1 in the first period.

A Brett Bryant goal just before the half trimmed HB United’s

deficit to 4-2.

HB United came within 4-3 in the third period when Faris Barudi

scored off a Bryant assist.

Bobby Ellis, Ty Wilson, Patrick Gannon and keepers Micah Downey

and Cameron McArthur keyed an HB United defense that shut out the Red

Devils over the final three quarters.

HB United 1, Region 117 0

In a battle between unbeaten teams, Sam Hunt scored an early goal,

and keepers Micah Downey and Cameron McArthur teamed in the net for

the shutout to lead HB United.

HB United, coached by John McArthur and John Bryant, had defeated

Region 1335, 6-1, and Region 55, 5-2, to run their tournament pool

play record to 6-0-1.

Quicksilver 6, Sana Ana 0

John McFall netted four goals, Brandon Dang scored off a corner

kick and Luke Bosijevac completed the scoring for Quicksilver.

Trevor Verone came up with a pair of saves, and Kyle Garibay and

Wade Sias each had one assist.

Keeper Tyler Folkins recorded the save. He was backed by a staunch

defense that included outstanding play by Dang at center defender and

mid-fielders Kyle Hisa, Matt Feltman and David Pinault.

Quicksilver began the weekend with a 4-2 loss to Region 56.

Gunners 5, Region 517 2

Justin Smith scored twice, Zach Jacobs, Matthew Steinhaus and

Christian Rodriguez each scored once for the Gunners.

Steinhaus had two assists and Jacobs and Taylor Nelson each had

one.

Zach Jacobs and Justin Smith each scored for the Gunners.

Gunners 2, Region 143 1

Taylor Nelson lofted a shot into the net in the closing minutes to

lift the Gunners to the victory, which put them at 5-1-1 in

tournament play.

Zach Jacobs scored off a Justin Smith feed for the Gunners’ first

goal.

Keeper Nicholas Carrigan, fullbacks Shane Bennett, Gavin Perdomo

and Mitchell Phillpy, and mid-fielder Marco Randazzo, led the way on

defense.

Area K Playoffs

Goal de Locks 4, Region 517 0

Haley Townsend scored two goals deflected off defenders and

finished with three goals and one assist overall for Goal de Locks.

Arielle Freleaux scored the other goal, and Brianna Webster,

George Demes and Kristy Verone keyed the defense.

Goal de Locks 4, Region 5 0

Haley Townsend came up with a hat trick -- all three on breakaway

goals in the second quarter -- to lead Goal de Locks.

Shannon Bolotin, who had several key saves in the same period,

came out to play forward in the fourth quarter and scored the game’s

final goal.

Vicky Hill and Teresa Bandurian played strong defensive games for

Goal de Locks.

Alison Hensley’s penalty kick goal in the fourth quarter earned

Goal de Locks the tie.

Goal de Locks 2, Region 56 1

Erika Longoria scored off a long cross by Hope Garski and Garski

later scored on a breakaway as the Goal de Locks overcame a 1-0

deficit to complete a busy weekend of playoff action with a 3-0-1

record.

Stephanie Layton, Jessica Parker and Brianna Webster led the Goal

de Locks on defense.
