INSIDE THE

SCHOOL DISTRICT

Here are some of the decisions coming out of Tuesday’s school

board meeting:

MEASURE A PROGRAM UPDATE

WHAT HAPPENED

The board listened to the quarterly report on the status of the

Measure A Program as presented by Rob Ragland of McCarthy Building

Companies Inc. While the expenditures for the program appear to be on

track, the funding, as of now, is only sufficient to complete

construction through level 4, which includes classroom renovation and

technology upgrades.

Three more levels follow level 4 and include new construction and

additional renovations, athletic facility work and landscaping.

WHAT IT MEANS

The board approved the report as it was presented, reserving the

right to revisit the issue.

EXPELLED YOUTH PLAN

WHAT HAPPENED

Jaime Castellanos and Susan Despenas, assistant superintendents of

secondary education and elementary education, respectively, presented

a revised plan for expelled youth to the board. The new plan will

allow school officials from counseling to gang intervention to

intervene on behalf of expelled or at-risk students. The

superintendents hope such intervention will aid students’ transitions

to a new school or class and solve problems before expulsion.

WHAT IT MEANS

The board approved the revisions to the plan in a 7-0 vote and

were pleased to see the district taking steps to help at-risk

students. While these new revisions will not take the place of

expulsion, it aims to help avoid expulsions, if at all possible, and

help student adjustment once an expulsion has been executed.
