UC Riverside maintained its first-day lead and won the
championship of the 23rd annual Anteater Men’s Golf Invitational at
Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach Tuesday. The Highlanders
finished with a 54-hole total of 874, including a team score of 301
in the rain-delayed third round.
UC Irvine finished second with a three-round total of 892 and UTEP
was third at 895 in the 11-team field. UTEP’s Chris Baryla won
medalist honors with a 3-under total of 213, including an even-par 72
in the final round.
Eric Riehle of UC Riverside and Dan Swanson of UTEP tied for
second at 216.
No one in the 60-player field broke par Tuesday as Riehle was the
only other player to shoot a 72 in the last round.
UCI junior Vinnie Poncino finished seventh at 220 after a final
round of 76.
Seniors Jeff Coburn and Ryan Armstrong tied for 15th place at 225,
as Armstrong shot 77 and Coburn 79 Tuesday. Freshman Ryne Rindfleisch
shot 75 in the final round and finished 19th at 226 and freshman Jay
Choe also shot a 75 to place 31st at 232.
Playing as individuals, Ryan Cole shot 80 to finish 47th at 238,
Will Park also shot an 80 Tuesday to place 54th at 240 and Nick
Asbrock had an 88 to finish 56th at 242.
UC Irvine is idle from competition until the Stevinson Ranch
Invitational in Turlock March 24-25.
