Costa Mesa girls rule Golden West

* GIRLS: The Costa Mesa High soccer team clinched the Golden West

League title with a 6-0 victory over visiting Westminster Friday.

The league championship in girls soccer is the Mustangs’ first in

school history.

“They set the goal as league champions and went straight through

and did it,” Mesa Coach Dan Johnston said of his squad. “It feels

pretty good.”

Sophomore Jenny Sparks had a hat trick for the Mustangs (17-1-2,

11-0-0), while sophomores Nilani Duarte, Vera Gale and Rachel

Ronquillo scored one goal each.

Senior Sharon Day recorded her 31st assist of the season.

Ronquillo, Duarte, senior Kristen Bagwell and freshman Jasmin Day

also contributed one assist each.

Sophomore Kindra Bailey stopped three shots.

Westminster dropped to 4-12-4, 2-7-2.

* BOYS: The Newport Harbor High’s soccer team scored three goals

in the first half and shut out Sea View League host Laguna Hills

Friday.

The Sailors (8-3-3, 6-1-2 in league) remained in second place in

the Sea View League race.

Juniors Joel Walker, Chase Kelly and Matt Tracy scored one goal

each. Kelly also finished with an assist. Goalie Mark Spears recorded

one save.

Newport Coach Martyn Hansford said senior Brandon Lufty provided

the Sailors with an excellent performance.

“He’s come in and has provided a sense of maturity for the team,”

Hansford said of Lufty.

* GIRLS: Sage Hill School dropped a 4-1 Academy League decision

at Capistrano Valley Christian Friday.

Megan Curry connected for the Lightning’s only goal and Laura

Gordon had nine saves as Sage Hill fell to 3-11, 2-6 in league.

Capo Valley Christian improved to 7-1-0 in league play.

Ashley Negrette, an outside half for Sage Hill, stood out with her

crosses and solid shot attempts.

Sage Hill hosts Whitney on Tuesday.
