Newport Harbor High’s girls water polo team swept to a lopsided
17-3 Sea View League victory over visiting Laguna Hills Wednesday to
improve to 15-3, 3-0 in league play.
Anne Belden had seven goals, three assists and four steals on a
day when it appeared the Sailors were playing with loaded dice
despite the absence of two starters, Jenna Murphy and Raelyn Ritchie,
who were ill.
Annie Wight had three goals and an assist, Paige Lansing had two
goals and an assist, Carolyn Conway had two goals and three steals
and Jessica Ball had one goal, four assists and three steals.
And, Alex Anderson had a goal, two assists and a steal, Ashley
Parole had a goal and an assist, and Peggy Beebe had an assist and a
steal.
* Westminster High goalie Nicole Meyer took the Lions’ offense
into her own hands Wednesday, firing the length of the pool for the
winning goal with 30 seconds left in a 4-3 Golden West League victory
at Costa Mesa.
Mesa had the ball stolen on its final possession.
Senior Katie Thorsness scored twice for the hosts, who also had
one goal from sophomore Sarah Bowman. Sophomore goalie Michelle Payne
made 13 saves for the Mustangs, who fell to 10-4, 3-1 in league.
