ON THE AGENDA
ARTS GRANT PROGRAM
School board members will consider approving the Our
Students/Ourselves -- Instruction with Arts Standards and Assessment
project.
Under the proposal, the board would authorize a $22,000 grant to
support visual and performing arts programs at the schools.
Proponents of the grant, which adheres to the district’s strategic
plan and commitment to the arts, believe that it will strengthen and
build standard-based instruction and assessment while increasing the
number of trained arts teachers from six to 22.
While the California Department of Education does provide money to
school districts for this purpose, the application process is very
competitive.
WHAT TO EXPECT
School district officials have recommended that the board approve
the submission of the grant application.
GOVERNOR’S PROPOSAL
The board is being asked to listen to a summary of highlights of
Gov. Gray Davis’ 2003-04 budget proposal for K-12 education programs.
The proposal, which was announced Jan. 10, will probably face one
more revision in May.
The presentations will focus on how the statewide proposal will
directly affect the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The board will hear the presentation.
